Erikson's Psychosocial Stages

Erik Erikson described eight stages across the whole life span. At each stage the person faces a conflict between two opposite pulls, and the way the environment responds decides which side wins. Three of these stages fall inside the primary school years, so a teacher's behaviour shapes their outcome directly.

The eight stages

StageAgeConflictVirtue gained
10-1 yearTrust vs mistrustHope
21-3 yearsAutonomy vs shame and doubtWill
33-6 yearsInitiative vs guiltPurpose
46-12 yearsIndustry vs inferiorityCompetence

Stage 4: the CTET stage

Industry versus inferiority covers ages six to twelve — exactly Classes 1 to 5. The child now wants to make things, finish tasks and be recognised as capable. When effort is noticed and skills are built, the child develops industry and the virtue of competence. When work is constantly compared, ridiculed or marked only by failure, the child concludes he is not able and settles into inferiority.

  • A Class 3 child who is praised for a neat map keeps drawing maps.
  • A Class 4 child whose spelling is read out as the worst stops writing at all.
  • A Class 5 child given a real job — keeping the library register — starts arriving early.

Why the environment decides the outcome

Erikson's point is that the conflict is not settled inside the child. It is settled by how the people around respond. The same Class 2 child who fumbles a reading turn becomes industrious in a room where the teacher waits, and inferior in a room where the class laughs. Two children with the same ability can leave Class 5 with opposite self-images purely because of the feedback they lived with.

What this asks of a teacher

  • Give tasks that can actually be completed, then let the child display the result.
  • Comment on the work, not on the child: 'the second step needs checking', not 'you are careless'.
  • Avoid public ranking; it manufactures inferiority in exactly this stage.
  • Give responsibility — monitor duties, group leadership by rotation, classroom jobs.

Identity versus role confusion is the stage of primary school children.  |   That is adolescence; primary school is industry versus inferiority.

संकेत: कक्षा 1-5 की अवस्था = परिश्रम बनाम हीनता (industry vs inferiority); बच्चे को काम पूरा करने और सराहे जाने की ज़रूरत होती है।

Erikson brings one question most cycles, usually asking which conflict belongs to a given age or to school-going children. Memorise stage 4 first — industry versus inferiority, 6-12 years — because that is what a primary paper asks about. The trap is offering 'initiative versus guilt' as the primary school answer; that is the pre-school stage of 3-6 years. A second trap asks for the virtue: competence goes with industry, purpose with initiative.

Frequently asked questions

Which Erikson stage applies to CTET Paper 1 children?

Industry versus inferiority, from about six to twelve years. Children want to build skills and finish real tasks, and the recognition they receive decides whether they feel competent or inferior.

How can a teacher promote industry rather than inferiority?

By setting tasks children can complete, praising specific effort, giving classroom responsibilities, and avoiding public comparison of marks or handwriting, which convinces slower children that they lack ability.

How is Erikson's theory different from Freud's?

Erikson's stages are psychosocial and cover the entire life span, focusing on the person's relationship with society. Freud's are psychosexual, driven by biological energy and largely complete by adolescence.

60-second recap

  • Eight psychosocial stages, each a conflict resolved by the environment.
  • Classes 1-5 = stage 4, industry versus inferiority, virtue competence.
  • 3-6 years = initiative versus guilt; 12-19 = identity versus role confusion.
  • Public comparison and ridicule breed inferiority at exactly this age.
  • Erikson is psychosocial and lifelong; Freud is psychosexual and early.
