Articles and Determiners

Articles give 2 to 3 questions in the Part-III paper, and they are the commonest source of error for Indian speakers because Hindi has no article system. The rules are finite, so this is one of the most improvable areas in the whole grammar block.

A, An and The

The choice between a and an depends on the sound that follows, not the letter.

RuleCorrectReason
Consonant sounda university, a European, a one-rupee noteSounds begin with /j/ or /w/
Vowel soundan hour, an honest man, an MA, an MLASilent h; letter names begin with a vowel sound
Abbreviation read as lettersan SDO, an FIRSounds like 'ess', 'eff'
Abbreviation read as a worda NASA scientistSounds like 'nassa'

When to Use The

  • Before something already mentioned or uniquely identified — the sun, the Ganga, the Himalayas.
  • Before rivers, seas, oceans, mountain ranges, deserts, island groups and gulfs.
  • Before superlatives and ordinals — the best, the first.
  • Before an adjective used as a plural noun — the poor, the rich, the blind.
  • Before names of newspapers, ships, holy books and historic buildings.
  • Before a singular noun standing for a whole class — the cow is a useful animal.

The article is omitted before proper nouns, before names of single mountains and lakes (Everest, Dal Lake), before meals, languages, subjects, games, and before abstract and material nouns used generally — honesty is the best policy, gold is precious.

Note the pair that gets asked: names of mountain ranges take the (the Himalayas) but individual peaks do not (Everest). The same distinction runs through island groups and single islands.

Determiners of Quantity

The few / a few and little / a little contrast is the most examined determiner point. He has few friends means he is nearly friendless; he has a few friends means he has some. Dropping or adding that article reverses the meaning entirely.

He has a little knowledge of the subject, so he failed  |   He has little knowledge of the subject, so he failed

few = लगभग कोई नहीं; a few = कुछ हैं।

TRE pointer: Article questions are almost guaranteed because Hindi has no articles and the examiner knows exactly where a Hindi-medium graduate will slip. The sound-not-letter rule for a and an and the few versus a few contrast are the two highest-yield items. With five options and −1/3 negative marking, this is a topic where a fortnight of focused revision converts directly into marks.

60-Second Recap

  • A or an depends on the following sound, not the letter.
  • A university, a European, an hour, an honest man, an MLA.
  • The before rivers, seas, ranges, deserts, superlatives and adjectives used as nouns.
  • Mountain ranges take the; individual peaks do not.
  • No article before languages, subjects, meals, games or abstract nouns used generally.
  • Few and little mean almost none; a few and a little mean some.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it an hour but a university?

Because the choice follows sound, not spelling. The h in hour is silent, so the word begins with a vowel sound and takes an. University begins with a consonant sound like yoo, so it takes a. The same logic gives a European and an MLA.

What is the difference between few and a few?

Few carries a negative sense and means hardly any, while a few is positive and means some, though not many. He has few friends suggests loneliness; he has a few friends suggests he has company. Little and a little work identically with uncountable nouns.

When is the used before place names?

Before rivers, seas, oceans, gulfs, mountain ranges, deserts and groups of islands, so the Ganga, the Himalayas, the Thar. It is omitted before individual mountains, lakes and most countries and cities, so Everest and Patna take no article.

Do I use an article before a language or a subject?

No article is used when speaking generally, as in she teaches English or he is good at mathematics. The article returns when the reference is specific, as in the English of Shakespeare, where a particular variety is meant.
