Parts of Speech and Their Functions
Part-III English carries 80 questions and Grammar and Usage supplies the largest share of them, around 20. This topic is the foundation: almost every later rule is stated in terms of these eight categories. The examinable point is that a word's class depends on its function in the sentence, not on the word itself.

Function Decides the Class
A single word can belong to several classes depending on its use in the sentence. This is the point Part-III tests, because a graduate-level paper assumes you can parse rather than merely recognise.
- He gave a light answer. — adjective

- She travelled light. — adverb
The same applies to but, which is a conjunction in poor but honest, a preposition in none but him, and an adverb in he is but a child.

Nouns that look plural but take a singular verb — news, mathematics, physics, politics — and nouns that look singular but take a plural verb — cattle, police, poultry — are examined constantly. So are the uncountables that Indian English tends to pluralise: information, furniture, luggage, equipment, advice, scenery have no plural form.

Adjective and Adverb Order
Adjectives of quality follow a settled order before a noun: opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material, purpose. So a beautiful small old round brown Indian wooden dining table — a sequence questions occasionally scramble.
Adverbs of manner usually follow the verb or the object, never between verb and object. She speaks English fluently, not she speaks fluently English. This word-order rule is the one most often violated by Indian candidates and is therefore set deliberately.

TRE pointer: The eligibility for the English post is Honours or Subsidiary English at graduation, so the paper is pitched well above school grammar. Expect to be asked the part of speech of a word in a given sentence rather than a definition. The uncountable-noun list is the single most productive area for error-correction questions in an Indian paper. Remember the marking rule too — five options A to E, −1/3 for a wrong answer, and option E must be marked to skip.

Can the same word be more than one part of speech?
Yes, and this is what the paper tests. The word light is an adjective, a verb, a noun and an adverb in different sentences. You must read the sentence and identify the function rather than recall a fixed label attached to the word itself.
Why is informations wrong?
Because information is an uncountable noun in English and has no plural form. The same applies to furniture, luggage, equipment, advice, scenery and machinery. To count them you use a partitive: two pieces of information, three items of furniture.
Is police singular or plural?
Plural. It takes a plural verb, as in the police have arrested him. Cattle and poultry behave the same way. In the opposite direction, news, mathematics, physics and politics look plural but take singular verbs.
What is the correct order of adjectives before a noun?
Opinion, size, age, shape, colour, origin, material and purpose, in that sequence. Native speakers apply it without thinking, which is why questions scramble the order to test whether a candidate knows the rule explicitly rather than by ear.
