Environment and Ecology
Environment and Ecology
Environment questions in SSC CGL cover conservation projects and their launch years, the difference between national parks, sanctuaries and biosphere reserves, and the main international climate agreements. Project Tiger began in 1973 and Project Elephant in 1992.
Conservation projects
| Project | Year | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Project Tiger | 1973 | Tiger conservation through reserves |
| Project Elephant | 1992 | Elephant habitat and corridors |
| Chipko movement | 1973 | Tree protection in Uttarakhand |
| Ganga Action Plan | 1985 | River pollution control |
The Chipko movement, associated with Sundarlal Bahuguna, is treated as a landmark in Indian environmental history and appears regularly as a one-line question.
Types of protected areas
- A national park has the highest level of protection and no grazing or private rights.
- A wildlife sanctuary allows some regulated human activity.
- A biosphere reserve covers a larger area with core, buffer and transition zones.
- A Ramsar site is a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.
Climate and atmosphere
Main greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide and water vapour
The ozone layer, which absorbs ultraviolet radiation, lies in the stratosphere and is depleted by chlorofluorocarbons. The Montreal Protocol addressed ozone-depleting substances, while the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement of 2015 address greenhouse gas emissions.
Ozone parat samatap mandal yaani stratosphere me hai, kshobh mandal me nahi - ye fark SSC baar-baar poochta hai.
Ecosystems and food chains
An ecosystem consists of producers, consumers and decomposers, with energy flowing in one direction from the sun through green plants to herbivores and then carnivores. Only about ten percent of energy passes from one trophic level to the next, which is why food chains are short. Biodiversity hotspots in India include the Western Ghats, the Eastern Himalayas and the Indo-Burma region. Questions from this part are usually definitional, asking which organisms are producers or what a decomposer does, and they are worth learning because the answers never change from year to year.
Solved examples
Example 1. In which year was Project Tiger launched? In 1973.
Example 2. In which atmospheric layer is the ozone layer found? In the stratosphere.
Example 3. Which agreement of 2015 addresses climate change? The Paris Agreement.
Example 4. Who is associated with the Chipko movement? Sundarlal Bahuguna.
Example 5. How much energy passes from one trophic level to the next? About ten percent, which is why food chains rarely exceed four or five levels.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ The ozone layer lies in the troposphere | ✓ It lies in the stratosphere
✗ The Montreal Protocol deals with greenhouse gases | ✓ It deals with ozone-depleting substances
Exam pointer — Environment gives about 1 question per shift and overlaps with the current affairs topic, since new Ramsar sites and tiger reserves are announced regularly. The project-and-year table is the fixed part worth memorising; the changing part belongs to your current affairs revision instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
When was Project Tiger launched?
In 1973, to protect tigers through a network of dedicated reserves. Project Elephant followed much later, in 1992.
Where is the ozone layer located?
In the stratosphere, the second layer of the atmosphere. It absorbs most ultraviolet radiation and is depleted by chlorofluorocarbons.
What is the difference between a national park and a sanctuary?
A national park has stricter protection with no grazing or private rights allowed, while a wildlife sanctuary permits certain regulated human activities.
What is a Ramsar site?
A wetland recognised as being of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. India adds new sites periodically, so this overlaps with current affairs preparation.
60-second recap

|---|---|---|
| Project Tiger | 1973 | reserve
| Project Elephant | 1992 |
| Chipko movement | 1973 | Uttarakhand
| Ganga Action Plan | 1985 |
- National park
- Wildlife sanctuary
- Ramsar site, Ramsar Convention
मुख्य greenhouse gases: carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide और water vapour
Ozone parat samatap mandal yaani stratosphere me hai, kshobh mandal me nahi - ye fark SSC baar-baar poochta hai.
Paris Agreement।
Frequently Asked Questions
Project Tiger
Ozone
Ramsar site
