Basic Economic Concepts

Economics studies how limited resources meet unlimited wants. For SSC CGL you need the three sectors of the economy, the difference between microeconomics and macroeconomics, and the basic laws of demand and supply. Each is asked as a short definitional question.

Micro and macro

BranchStudiesExamples
MicroeconomicsIndividual unitsPrice of a good, a firm's output
MacroeconomicsThe economy as a wholeNational income, inflation, unemployment

The three sectors

  • Primary sector: agriculture, forestry, fishing and mining, drawing directly on nature.
  • Secondary sector: manufacturing and construction, which process raw materials.
  • Tertiary sector: services such as banking, transport, education and health.
  • The tertiary sector contributes the largest share of India's output today.

Opportunity cost is the value of the next best alternative given up

Demand and supply

The law of demand states that, other things being equal, demand falls as price rises. The law of supply states that supply rises as price rises. Their intersection gives the equilibrium price. Giffen goods and Veblen goods are the standard exceptions to the law of demand.

Types of goods

TypeMeaningExample
Normal goodDemand rises with incomeBranded clothing
Inferior goodDemand falls as income risesCoarse grain
Giffen goodDemand rises with priceA staple among the very poor
Veblen goodDemand rises with price for statusLuxury items
Public goodNon-rival and non-excludableStreet lighting

Teenon kshetra ka fark saaf rakho. Khan aur kheti primary hain, karkhana secondary hai, aur bank aur parivahan tertiary hain.

Types of economy

A capitalist economy leaves production and distribution to private ownership and the price mechanism, a socialist economy places them under state control, and a mixed economy combines the two. India adopted a mixed economy after independence, with a large public sector alongside private enterprise, and moved towards greater liberalisation from 1991 onwards. That year of reform is a standard one-line question, as are the three components of the reform programme, usually summarised as liberalisation, privatisation and globalisation. Elasticity of demand, which measures how sharply demand responds to a change in price, is the other definitional item asked from this part of the syllabus.

Solved examples

Example 1. Mining belongs to which sector? The primary sector.

Example 2. What is opportunity cost? The value of the next best alternative forgone.

Example 3. Which good sees demand rise as its price rises, among very poor consumers? A Giffen good.

Example 4. Which sector contributes the largest share of India's output? The tertiary sector.

Traps SSC repeats

Mining is part of the secondary sector  |   It is primary, since it draws directly on nature

Inflation is studied in microeconomics  |   It is a macroeconomic subject

Exam pointer — Economy gives 2 to 3 questions in General Awareness, and the definitional part is the easiest half. These are 10-second questions with no calculation. Because economics overlaps with current affairs, keep the concepts here separate from the changing figures, which belong to your current affairs revision.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the three sectors of the economy?

The primary sector covers agriculture, mining and other activities drawing directly on nature; the secondary sector covers manufacturing and construction; and the tertiary sector covers services.

What is the difference between microeconomics and macroeconomics?

Microeconomics studies individual units such as a household or a firm, while macroeconomics studies the economy as a whole, including national income, inflation and unemployment.

What is opportunity cost?

The value of the next best alternative that is given up when a choice is made. It is a measure of what a decision actually costs in real terms.

What is a Giffen good?

A good whose demand rises as its price rises, seen among very poor consumers for staple items. It is one of the recognised exceptions to the law of demand.

60-second recap

  • Primary draws on nature, secondary manufactures, tertiary serves.
  • Micro studies units; macro studies the whole economy.
  • Opportunity cost is the next best alternative forgone.
  • Demand falls as price rises, with Giffen and Veblen exceptions.
  • The tertiary sector is India's largest by output share.

  • Primary sector:
  • Secondary sector:

Opportunity cost

Giffen goods और Veblen goods law of demand के मानक अपवाद हैं।

Teenon kshetra ka fark saaf rakho. Khan aur kheti primary hain, karkhana secondary hai, aur bank aur parivahan tertiary hain.

Giffen good की।

Frequently Asked Questions

Opportunity cost

Giffen good क्या है?

60-second recap

  • Opportunity cost
