Inflation and Taxation

By ExamAtlas · 9/3/2026

Inflation and Taxation

Inflation is a sustained rise in the general price level. It is measured through the Consumer Price Index and the Wholesale Price Index. Taxes are direct when the burden cannot be shifted, such as income tax, and indirect when it can be, such as the Goods and Services Tax.

Demand-pullDemand exceeds supplyToo much money chasing too few goods

The Goods and Services Tax

GST came into force on 1 July 2017 under the 101st Constitutional Amendment of 2016. It replaced a range of central and state indirect taxes and is administered through the GST Council, chaired by the Union Finance Minister with state finance ministers as members.

Effects of inflation

Inflation redistributes income rather than destroying it. Borrowers gain because they repay in money worth less than what they borrowed, while lenders lose for the same reason. People on fixed incomes, such as pensioners, lose purchasing power, and holders of real assets such as land tend to gain. Moderate inflation is generally regarded as consistent with growth, while very high inflation discourages saving and investment. SSC asks who gains and who loses from inflation as a direct question, so that pairing is worth fixing clearly.

Solved examples

Example 1. Which is an example of a direct tax? Income tax.

Example 2. When did GST come into force? On 1 July 2017.

Example 3. What is stagflation? Inflation together with stagnant growth and high unemployment.

Example 4. Which index measures retail prices? The Consumer Price Index.

Traps SSC repeats

GST is a direct tax  |   It is an indirect tax; its burden falls on the consumer

Deflation and disinflation mean the same thing  |   Deflation is falling prices; disinflation is a slower rise

Exam pointer — Inflation and taxation give about 1 question per shift, and the direct-versus-indirect distinction is the most repeated. The GST date and amendment number are also standard. Both are 10-second recall questions, so this topic gives a good return for the small amount of memorising it needs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between direct and indirect tax?

The burden of a direct tax such as income tax cannot be passed on to anyone else, while the burden of an indirect tax such as GST is passed on to the final consumer through the price.

When was GST introduced in India?

On 1 July 2017, under the 101st Constitutional Amendment passed in 2016. It replaced several central and state indirect taxes with a single tax structure.

What is stagflation?

A situation in which inflation is high while economic growth is stagnant and unemployment is rising. It is difficult to treat because the usual remedies for one problem worsen the other.

What is the difference between CPI and WPI?

The Consumer Price Index tracks the prices consumers pay at the retail level, while the Wholesale Price Index tracks prices at the wholesale stage before goods reach the consumer.

60-second recap

Goods and Services Tax यानी GST

Inflation

Income tax

Consumer Price Index

Frequently Asked Questions

Stagflation
