Figure Series
Figure Series
A figure series shows several figures changing by a fixed rule and asks for the next one. Do not compare whole figures. Track one element at a time across the series, note how it changes, and then apply every tracked change together to the last figure.
What changes, element by element
| Element | Typical change | How to track |
|---|---|---|
| Rotation | 45 or 90 degrees each step | Follow one marked corner |
| Number of parts | One added or removed each step | Count them each time |
| Shading | Moves to the next section | Follow the shaded region |
| Position | Element moves round the figure | Note clockwise or anticlockwise |
| Size | Alternately grows and shrinks | Compare alternate figures |
Track one element across all figures before looking at the next element
Rotation is the most common rule
Most SSC figure series involve rotation of the whole figure or of one element inside it. Pick a distinctive part, such as an arrow head or a shaded corner, and follow only that part from the first figure to the last. The angle it turns each step is usually the whole answer.
Alternating rules
When consecutive figures seem unrelated, compare figure one with figure three and figure two with figure four. Series that alternate between two separate rules are common and look chaotic until they are split this way.
Worked approach
Approach 1. If a line rotates 45 degrees clockwise each step and a dot moves one corner clockwise each step, the next figure has the line 45 degrees further round and the dot at the following corner. Apply both changes to the final given figure, not to the first.
Approach 2. If the count of small circles goes 1, 2, 3, 4 while the outer shape stays the same, the next figure has five circles in the same shape. A change in one element does not imply a change in the others.
Approach 3. If the shading moves two sections clockwise each time in an eight-section figure, then after four steps it returns to a position halfway round. Counting sections is more reliable than judging by eye.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ Compare the whole figure at once | ✓ Track one element at a time
✗ Assume every element changes together | ✓ Some elements stay fixed throughout the series
Ek-ek tatva ko alag se track karo. Poori aakriti ek saath dekhne se badlav dikhta hi nahi, aur time bhi zyada lagta hai.
Exam pointer — Non-verbal reasoning gives 3 to 5 questions in SSC CGL Tier 1, and figure series is the largest share. Each takes 25 to 35 seconds. Because these questions need no writing and no calculation, they are efficient marks under the sectional timer, and they should be attempted before puzzles and arrangements.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I solve figure series questions?
Track one element at a time across all the figures, noting how it changes, then apply every change together to the last figure. Comparing whole figures at once is slower and less reliable.
What is the most common rule in SSC figure series?
Rotation, either of the whole figure or of one element inside it. Following a single distinctive part, such as an arrow head, usually reveals the angle of rotation immediately.
What if consecutive figures seem unrelated?
Compare alternate figures instead, matching the first with the third and the second with the fourth. Series alternating between two rules look random until they are split this way.
How much time should a figure series question take?
About 25 to 35 seconds. Since they need no working on paper, they are among the more time-efficient questions in the reasoning section.
60-second recap

Rotation
Ek-ek tatva ko alag se track karo. Poori aakriti ek saath dekhne se badlav dikhta hi nahi, aur time bhi zyada lagta hai.
Frequently Asked Questions
Figure series
Figure series
