Course of Action

Course of Action

A course of action question gives a problem and suggests steps. A step follows only if it directly addresses the stated problem, is practical to carry out, and is proportionate. Extreme steps, vague appeals and actions solving a different problem are all rejected.

The three tests

  1. Relevance: does it address the problem actually stated?
  2. Practicality: can the authority named realistically carry it out?
  3. Proportion: is it a measured response rather than an extreme one?

A valid action is relevant, practical and proportionate

Actions that are usually rejected

Type of actionWhy rejectedExample wording
ExtremeOut of proportionBan the activity entirely
VagueCannot be carried outPeople should be more careful
IrrelevantSolves a different problemBuild more roads for a water shortage
Punitive onlyIgnores the causePunish everyone involved

Actions that usually qualify

Steps that investigate the cause, issue a clear instruction, or provide the missing resource are normally valid. A practical, targeted step is preferred over a sweeping one even when the sweeping one sounds decisive.

Two actions together

Where two actions are given, test each against all three conditions independently. A pair often contains one measured step and one extreme step, and the presence of a clearly valid action does not make its partner valid.

Solved examples

Example 1. Problem: many students fail the exam every year. Action: the board should analyse the reasons for the poor results. This is relevant and practical, so it follows.

Example 2. Same problem. Action: the exam should be abolished. This is extreme and out of proportion, so it does not follow.

Example 3. Problem: a bridge has developed cracks. Action: the bridge should be closed until it is inspected. This is proportionate and practical, so it follows.

Example 4. Same problem. Action: all bridges in the country should be demolished. This is extreme and impractical, so it does not follow.

Example 5. Problem: a village has no drinking water source. Action: the district administration should arrange a tanker supply immediately and begin work on a borewell. Both parts are relevant and practical, so the action follows.

Traps SSC repeats

A strong action shows decisiveness, so it follows  |   Extreme actions are rejected as disproportionate

A general appeal to be careful is a valid action  |   Vague appeals cannot be carried out

Kadam wahi sahi hai jo samasya se seedha juda ho aur amal me laaya ja sake. Bahut kada ya bahut dhundhla kadam hamesha galat hota hai.

Exam pointer — Course of action appears in some shifts as part of the statement-based group and takes 25 seconds. The three tests settle nearly every option without deliberation, and because extreme wording is so consistently used in the wrong options, this is one of the few reasoning topics where scanning the options first is genuinely faster.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does a course of action follow?

When it is relevant to the stated problem, practical for the named authority to carry out, and proportionate in scale. All three conditions must hold together.

Why are extreme actions rejected?

Because they are disproportionate to the problem. Banning or abolishing something in response to a specific difficulty goes far beyond what the situation requires.

Are vague suggestions valid courses of action?

No. A step such as people should be more careful cannot actually be carried out by anyone, so it fails the practicality test even though it sounds sensible.

What kinds of action usually qualify?

Steps that investigate the cause, issue a clear instruction, or supply the missing resource. Targeted actions are preferred over sweeping ones even when the sweeping ones sound decisive.

Kadam wahi sahi hai jo samasya se seedha juda ho aur amal me laaya ja sake. Bahut kada ya bahut dhundhla kadam hamesha galat hota hai.

Exam pointer — Course of action

Frequently Asked Questions

Course of action

60-second recap
