Statement and Conclusion

Statement and Conclusion

A statement and conclusion question gives a short passage and asks which conclusions follow. A conclusion follows only if it is drawn strictly from the words given. Anything requiring outside knowledge, a probability judgement, or an extra assumption does not follow, however sensible it sounds.

The test to apply

  1. Is every word of the conclusion supported by the passage?
  2. Does it need any fact the passage does not state?
  3. Does it merely restate the passage, or does it draw something out of it?
  4. Does it overstate with words such as always, never, only or all?

Reject any conclusion needing information not in the passage

Restatement versus conclusion

A pure restatement of the passage is normally treated as not a conclusion, because a conclusion must be derived rather than repeated. A conclusion that is a direct logical consequence, however, does follow.

Extreme words are usually wrong

Conclusions containing always, never, only, none or all are rarely supported, because a short passage seldom justifies an absolute claim. Treat such words as a warning to check the passage twice.

Two conclusions together

Many questions give two conclusions and ask whether one, both or neither follows. Judge each one separately against the passage before comparing them, because a strong first conclusion tempts candidates into accepting a weak second one alongside it.

Solved examples

Example 1. Statement: regular exercise improves health. Conclusion: people who exercise regularly are healthier than those who do not. This is a direct consequence of the statement, so it follows.

Example 2. Same statement. Conclusion: everyone should exercise for one hour daily. The duration is nowhere in the statement, so it does not follow.

Example 3. Statement: the school will remain closed on Monday due to heavy rain. Conclusion: heavy rain is expected on Monday. The statement gives rain as the reason, so it follows.

Example 4. Same statement. Conclusion: the school always closes when it rains. The word always is far stronger than the single instance given, so it does not follow.

Traps SSC repeats

Accept a conclusion because it sounds reasonable  |   Accept it only if the passage supports every word

Treat a restatement as a conclusion  |   A conclusion must be derived, not repeated

Sirf wahi maano jo vaakya me likha hai. 'Sahi lagta hai' aur 'nikalta hai' do alag cheezein hain - SSC yahi fark jaanchta hai.

Exam pointer — Statement-based questions give 1 to 2 questions per shift across conclusion, assumption and course of action forms. Each takes 25 to 30 seconds. The extreme-word check settles a large share of them in five seconds, which makes it the single most useful habit in this group of topics.

Frequently Asked Questions

When does a conclusion follow from a statement?

Only when every part of it is supported by the words of the passage. If it needs outside knowledge or an extra assumption, it does not follow, however reasonable it appears.

Is a restatement of the passage a valid conclusion?

Usually not. A conclusion must be derived from the passage rather than repeat it, so a sentence that only rephrases the statement is normally rejected.

Why are conclusions with always or never usually wrong?

Because a short passage rarely justifies an absolute claim. Extreme words overstate what the statement supports, which is exactly why they are used in distractor options.

How much time should these questions take?

About 25 to 30 seconds each. Scanning for extreme words first often resolves the question immediately, making this one of the quicker verbal reasoning topics.

60-second recap

  • Support must come from the passage alone.
  • Reject anything needing outside knowledge.
  • A restatement is not a conclusion.
  • Always, never and only usually signal a wrong option.
  • Scan for extreme words first.

  4. क्या यह always, never, only या all जैसे शब्दों से बात बढ़ा रहा है?

Sirf wahi maano jo vaakya me likha hai. 'Sahi lagta hai' aur 'nikalta hai' do alag cheezein hain - SSC yahi fark jaanchta hai.

Frequently Asked Questions

60-second recap
