Jharkhand hosts some of India's oldest technical institutions and a growing network of state universities and medical colleges. IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, BIT Mesra, IIM Ranchi and RIMS Ranchi are the names asked most often.

• RIMS Ranchi — Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, the state's main referral hospital
• AIIMS Deoghar — the state's AIIMS in the Santhal Pargana side

• Government medical colleges also run at Jamshedpur, Dhanbad, Palamu, Hazaribagh and Dumka
• Ranchi is often described as a national centre for mental health care because of these institutions

Education indicators and gaps

• Literacy in 2011 was 66.41 percent, below the national average
• Female literacy at 55.42 percent is the weakest indicator
• Dropout is highest at the secondary stage, especially for girls
• Residential schools and Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya address this gap
• Teacher shortage and multi-grade teaching are common in remote blocks
• Language of instruction is a live issue in tribal language areas

Research and training bodies

• Tribal Research Institute, Ranchi — research and documentation on tribal society
• Central Coalfields and CIMFR — mining research presence in the Dhanbad belt
• Xavier Institute of Social Service, Ranchi — long standing social work and management institute
• Jharkhand Raksha Shakti University — police and security studies
• The state also runs administrative training and skill mission institutions
• Together these give the state a wider institutional base than its size suggests

• Vector borne disease and sickle cell are significant concerns in tribal belts
