Livestock and Forest-Based Livelihood

Livestock and Forest-Based Livelihood

For most rural families in Jharkhand, farming alone does not pay the year round. Livestock, lac, tasar silk, honey and collected forest produce fill the gap, and for tribal households they are often the main cash income.

Key allied sectors — livestock, lac, tasar silk, honey and minor forest produce

Livestock in the rural economy

  • Cattle, buffalo, goat, sheep, pig and poultry are all kept, usually in small numbers
  • Goat rearing is the most widespread, because it needs little land or capital
  • Backyard poultry gives quick cash and is a common women's activity
  • Milk yield is low, since local breeds and fodder are both weak
  • Livestock acts as a household savings and insurance asset, sold in a bad year
  • Veterinary cover and organised dairy chains remain thin outside the main towns

Lac and tasar

  • Lac is cultivated on host trees such as kusum, palash and ber
  • Jharkhand is among India's leading lac producing statesबार-बार पूछा जाता है
  • Lac is used in shellac, sealing wax, bangles and food glaze
  • Tasar silk is reared on asan and arjun trees
  • The state is a major source of tasar cocoons for India's silk industry
  • Both are non-farm activities that fit the forest and the cropping calendar

Minor forest produce

Sal leaf and seedPlates and cups; seed oilMainly after the monsoon
Mahua flower and seedFood, oil and traditional brewSpring
Tendu leafBidi makingSummer

Honey and medicinal plantsHousehold and market saleThrough the year
BambooBaskets, construction and craftThrough the year

Why this sector matters

  • It provides income in the lean months between crops
  • It needs little land, so it suits the landless and the very small farmer
  • It keeps money in villages that mining and industry do not reach
  • It gives women a direct earning role in the household economy
  • Its decline forces migration, so protecting it is a poverty question, not only an ecology one

Problems and support

  • Middlemen capture much of the margin on lac, tendu and honey
  • Forest access disputes limit collection rights in some tracts
  • Price fluctuation makes lac and tasar income unstable
  • Processing happens outside the state, so value addition is lost
  • Support comes through cooperatives, self-help groups and minimum support price for MFP

Memory hook — Char ajeevika ka jod — La-Ta-Ma-Te: Lah, Tasar, Mahua, Tendu. Kheti ke bahar ki poori kamai in chaar me simat jaati hai.

Yahan confuse hote hain — Lac aur tasar alag vrikshon par hote hain.

Lac and tasar are both reared on the sal tree  |   Lac is on kusum, palash and ber; tasar is on asan and arjun

Laghu vanopaj ka matlab kam ahmiyat  |   Kai parivaron ke liye yahi mukhya nakad aay hai

Exam pointer — JPSC me is topic ka use ajeevika aur palayan ke prashn me hota hai — likho ki khetee akeli saal bhar nahi chalti. JSSC CGL, JKCE aur JTET me seedha — lac kis vriksh par, tasar kis vriksh par. Do jodiyan yaad rakho, question pakka.
