Jharkhand under Mughal Rule
Jharkhand under Mughal Rule
Mughal control over Jharkhand was thin and repeatedly contested. Chronicles call the tract Kokrah and Jharkhand, and every reign from Akbar to Aurangzeb sent expeditions that won battles but never converted the plateau into a settled Mughal province.
Mughal names for the tract — Kokrah (Khukhra) and Jharkhand | Nature of control — tribute, not administration
Reign by reign
| Emperor | Event in Jharkhand | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Akbar | Campaigns bring Kokrah under nominal suzerainty | Tribute accepted, local rule continues |
| Jahangir | Ibrahim Khan Fateh Jung defeats Durjan Sal in 1615 | Durjan Sal imprisoned, later released |
| Shah Jahan | Renewed pressure on Palamu and Kokrah | Tribute reasserted, no permanent hold |
| Aurangzeb | Daud Khan attacks Palamu in 1660 | Forts taken, Medini Ray later recovers Palamu |
The Durjan Sal episode
- In 1615 Mughal forces under Ibrahim Khan Fateh Jung defeated the Nagvanshi ruler
- Durjan Sal was taken prisoner and held for years
- Tradition says he identified a genuine diamond among fakes and won his freedom
- He was restored with the title Shah and an annual tribute obligation
- The episode is the classic example of Mughal policy — subordinate, do not replace
Palamu and the limits of Mughal power
- Under Aurangzeb, Daud Khan marched on Palamu in 1660
- The Chero forts fell and destruction followed, but occupation did not last
- Medini Ray recovered the kingdom and the Mughals did not retake it
- Palamu shows the pattern — the Mughals could win the campaign and still lose the country
- Forest, hills and the absence of a revenue base made permanent occupation uneconomic
Why Mughal rule stayed shallow
- The plateau had no large settled agrarian surplus to tax
- Terrain favoured the defender — forest cover, hills and scattered forts
- Local chiefs were useful as tribute payers, not worth replacing with governors
- Mughal interest was mainly diamonds, elephants and route security toward Bengal and Odisha
- As a result the tract kept its own tenure and village institutions intact into the British period
Terms and names to lock in
- Kokrah / Khukhra — Mughal name for the Nagvanshi territoryबार-बार पूछा जाता है
- Ibrahim Khan Fateh Jung — commander who defeated Durjan Sal in 1615
- Daud Khan — Aurangzeb's commander against Palamu in 1660
- Medini Ray — the Chero ruler who recovered Palamu
- Subah of Bihar — the Mughal province the tract was formally attached to
Memory hook — Char badshah, char yaad — Akbar = naam (Kokrah), Jahangir = 1615 Durjan Sal, Shahjahan = dabav, Aurangzeb = 1660 Palamu. Do saal hi ratne hain: 1615 aur 1660.
Yahan confuse hote hain — Do abhiyaan aur do vansh alag hain.
✗ 1615 me Palamu par hamla hua | ✓ 1615 me Kokrah par hamla, Durjan Sal (Nagvanshi) bandi bane
✗ 1660 me Nagvanshi haare | ✓ 1660 me Palamu ke Chero par Daud Khan ka hamla hua
Exam pointer — JPSC Prelims me Mughal-Jharkhand relation par statement question aata hai aur Mains me 'Mughal shasan yahan gehra kyun nahi hua' type analytical prashn. JSSC CGL, JTGLCCE aur JTET me sirf saal aur naam — 1615, 1660, Durjan Sal, Daud Khan. Do saal aur do naam pakke kar lo, chapter ka ye hissa khatam.
