Gupta Age: Science, Art and Society
NCERT Class 12 - Themes in Indian History Part I, Chapter 2
Gupta Age: Science, Art and Society
The Gupta period is often called the Golden Age because of its achievements in mathematics, astronomy, Sanskrit literature and temple architecture. The label is debated, since the same period saw the position of women and of shudras decline.
Mathematics and astronomy
- Aryabhata wrote the Aryabhatiya and stated that the earth rotates on its own axis, explaining day and night, and that eclipses are caused by shadows, not by a demon.
- He gave a close approximate value of pi and worked on the area of a triangle and on square and cube roots.
- Varahamihira wrote the Brihat Samhita, an encyclopedic work, and the Panchasiddhantika, which summarises five astronomical systems including a Greek-derived one.
- The decimal system with place value was in use, and the concept of zero matured in this tradition.
Medicine and metallurgy
- The medical tradition of Charaka on medicine and Sushruta on surgery was studied and extended; Vagbhata later summarised both.
- The iron pillar at Mehrauli in Delhi, dated to this period, has resisted rust for over a thousand years - evidence of advanced metallurgy.
- The huge copper Sultanganj Buddha, found in Bihar, shows large-scale metal casting.
Literature
| Author | Work | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Kalidasa | Abhijnanashakuntalam, Meghaduta | Drama and lyric poetry |
| Kalidasa | Raghuvamsha, Kumarasambhava | Epic poetry |
| Vishakhadatta | Mudrarakshasa | Political drama |
| Shudraka | Mrichchhakatika | Social drama |
| Amarasimha | Amarakosha | Sanskrit lexicon |
| Vishnu Sharma | Panchatantra | Animal fables |
- Sanskrit became the language of the court, of inscriptions and of literature, replacing Prakrit in official use.
- The Puranas took their present shape, and the two epics reached their final form in this period.
Art and architecture
- The Nagara style of temple begins, with a square sanctum (garbhagriha) and a pillared porch; the Dashavatara temple at Deogarh and the brick temple at Bhitargaon are key examples.
- The Sarnath Buddha in preaching posture, with its plain transparent robe and halo, is the finest Gupta sculpture.
- Many of the Ajanta cave paintings belong to this age, using natural pigments on plastered rock, with flowing lines and Jataka themes.
- Metal and terracotta work, and the Udayagiri caves near Vidisha with the great Varaha panel, complete the picture.
Society and the Golden Age debate
- Varna became more rigid, and the number of jatis multiplied as new groups and craft communities were absorbed.
- The condition of shudras improved slightly as they were allowed to be cultivators and to hear the epics and Puranas.
- Untouchability hardened, and Fa-Hien records that the chandalas lived outside towns and had to announce their approach.
- The position of women declined - early marriage spread, property rights narrowed, and the first clear epigraphic record of sati in India is the Eran inscription of this period.
- So the Golden Age label fits literature, science and art, but not the social order.
Exam me kaise aata hai
Match-the-following on author and work is near certain. Factual questions ask who said the earth rotates, which temple is of the Nagara style, and where the rust-free iron pillar stands. Statement-based questions test the Golden Age claim against the position of women.
UPSC / State PSC ke liye
For a balanced answer, separate the cultural and the social record. Add the economic point too - Fa-Hien describes a prosperous and peaceful society, but the decline in trade, the fall in coin purity and the spread of land grants show the material base was already weakening.
