Rainfall Distribution and Monsoon in Indian Life

Rainfall in India is very uneven. Some places receive more than four hundred centimetres a year while others receive under ten. This unevenness comes from the path of the monsoon branches, the position of the mountains, and the distance a place lies from the sea, and it shapes where crops, people and industry are found.

Regions of High and Low Rainfall

  • Very heavy rain falls on the windward Western Ghats, the north-eastern hills, and the sub-Himalayan north-east.
  • Mawsynram and Cherrapunji in Meghalaya are among the wettest places on earth.
  • Moderate rain falls over most of the Ganga plain, eastern Madhya Pradesh and the eastern Deccan.
  • Low rain falls in western Rajasthan, Ladakh, and parts of Gujarat, Haryana and Punjab.
  • The leeward Deccan lies in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats and stays dry.
  • Rainfall decreases westward across the Ganga plain, from Kolkata towards Delhi.
RegionRainfallReason
Windward Western GhatsVery highMoist winds forced to rise
Leeward DeccanLowRain shadow
North-east hillsVery highFunnel shaped hills trap winds
Western RajasthanVery lowWinds run parallel to the Aravalli

Variability, Drought and Flood

  • Variability is highest exactly where rainfall is lowest, so dry regions suffer most.
  • A weak or late monsoon causes drought, which affects kharif sowing and rural income.
  • A very heavy monsoon causes floods in Assam, Bihar, eastern Uttar Pradesh and coastal Odisha.
  • North Bihar floods every year because the Kosi, Gandak and Bagmati bring heavy water from Nepal.
  • Rainwater harvesting, canals and reservoirs help balance this uneven supply.

The Monsoon and Indian Life

  • Indian agriculture, especially the kharif crop, depends on monsoon timing.
  • The whole country waits for the same rain, which gives the monsoon a unifying role.
  • Many festivals and the traditional agricultural calendar follow the monsoon.
  • Groundwater recharge, hydropower and drinking water supply all depend on it.

Rain shadow — the dry area on the leeward side of a hill where descending air gives little rain.

Exam me kaise aata hai

  • Wettest place region in India — Meghalaya hills
  • The leeward Deccan is dry because of — rain shadow
  • Rainfall variability is highest where rainfall is — lowest
  • Which crop depends most on the monsoon — kharif

UPSC/State PSC ke liye

  • The Aravalli runs roughly parallel to the Arabian Sea branch, so the winds pass over Rajasthan without being forced to rise, which is why the desert stays dry.
  • Drought and flood can occur in the same year in different parts of India because of the uneven spatial distribution of the same monsoon.

Yahan confuse hote hain

Rajasthan is dry because the monsoon does not reach it | The monsoon passes over it but is not lifted, so it gives no rain  |

Rainfall increases from Kolkata to Delhi | It decreases westward  |

The Deccan is wet on both sides | The windward side is wet, the leeward side dry  |

Ek nazar me

  • Rainfall is very uneven; Meghalaya wettest, western Rajasthan driest.
  • Rain shadow keeps the leeward Deccan dry.
  • Variability is highest where rainfall is lowest.
  • Monsoon unifies India and decides the kharif crop.
