NEP 2020 treats teacher quality as the decisive factor in school education. By 2030 the minimum qualification for teaching will be a four-year integrated B.Ed., substandard teacher education institutions are to be closed, and every teacher is expected to undertake continuous professional development each year.
The main provisions
- A four-year integrated B.Ed. combining a bachelor's degree with teacher education becomes the minimum qualification by 2030.
- Two-year and one-year B.Ed. programmes to continue only for candidates who already hold a degree.
- Substandard and stand-alone teacher education institutions to be shut or brought into multidisciplinary institutions.
- A National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) to define what a teacher at each stage should know and be able to do.
- A National Curriculum Framework for Teacher Education to be prepared by NCTE in consultation with NCERT.
- At least 50 hours of continuous professional development for every teacher every year, chosen by the teacher.
- Merit-based, transparent recruitment, and an end to the practice of excessive teacher transfers.
- Teachers not to be used for non-teaching work such as mid-day meal cooking, so that teaching time is protected.

Why the CTET candidate should care
The Teacher Eligibility Test exists because of this chain: the RTE Act made NCTE the authority to lay down minimum qualifications, and NCTE made a pass in a TET one of them. NEP 2020 keeps and strengthens that requirement, and extends the professional standards a teacher is measured against beyond the entry test.
