A habitat is the place where an organism lives. Adaptation is the set of features that let it survive there. Adaptations develop over many generations, not within an individual's lifetime — a point students misunderstand and a teacher must correct.

Ecosystem and Food Chains
An ecosystem is made of living, or biotic, and non-living, or abiotic, components interacting together.
- Producers — green plants, which make their own food.
- Consumers — herbivores, carnivores and omnivores.
- Decomposers — bacteria and fungi, which return nutrients to the soil.
- Energy flows in one direction and decreases at each level, which is why food chains are short.
- Several interlinked food chains form a food web.
Removing one link disturbs the whole chain. If all the frogs in a field are killed, insects multiply and the crop suffers — the standard example used to show interdependence.
