Speech Mechanism and IPA Symbols
Speech Mechanism and IPA Symbols
Phonetics appears in the Part-III paper because the eligibility is Honours or Subsidiary English, where it is a compulsory paper. It gives 3 to 4 questions and is the topic candidates most often skip — which makes it the cheapest place to gain a relative advantage.
Why Spelling Cannot Be Trusted
English spelling and English sound diverged centuries ago. The letters ough are pronounced differently in though, through, tough, cough, bough and thought. Phonetics exists to describe sound directly, independent of spelling.
The International Phonetic Alphabet gives one symbol to one sound. Received Pronunciation, the accent used as the reference in Indian syllabuses, has 44 phonemes: 20 vowels and 24 consonants. Of the vowels, 12 are pure vowels or monophthongs and 8 are diphthongs.
44 phonemes = 20 vowels (12 pure + 8 diphthongs) + 24 consonants
Those four numbers are asked directly and more often than anything else in the chapter, so they are worth fixing first.
✗ English has 26 sounds because it has 26 letters | ✓ It has 26 letters but 44 phonemes; letters and sounds are separate systems
The Organs of Speech
| Organ | Role |
|---|---|
| Lungs | Supply the airstream for almost all speech |
| Vocal cords (in the larynx) | Vibrate for voiced sounds, stay apart for voiceless |
| Tongue | The most mobile articulator; shapes most sounds |
| Teeth and alveolar ridge | Points of contact for dental and alveolar sounds |
| Hard and soft palate | Contact points for palatal and velar sounds |
| Nasal cavity | Open for the nasal sounds /m/, /n/, /ŋ/ |
The vocal cords decide the single most tested consonant feature. Place a finger on the throat and say /s/ then /z/: the second vibrates. That vibration is voicing, and it separates /p/ from /b/, /t/ from /d/, /k/ from /g/, /f/ from /v/, and /s/ from /z/.
Phoneme, Allophone and Minimal Pair
- Phoneme — the smallest unit of sound that can change meaning.
- Allophone — a variant of a phoneme that does not change meaning, such as the aspirated and unaspirated /p/ in pin and spin.
- Minimal pair — two words differing in one phoneme only: pin / bin, ship / sheep, cat / cut.
- Syllable — a unit of pronunciation built around one vowel sound.
The minimal pair is the working tool of the whole subject: it is how a phonetician proves that two sounds are separate phonemes rather than variants. Questions frequently give four pairs and ask which is a genuine minimal pair.
Transcription Conventions
Phonemic transcription is written between slant brackets — /kt/ — and phonetic transcription between square brackets. The stress mark goes before the stressed syllable, raised for primary stress, lowered for secondary.
So photograph is transcribed with the stress mark before the first syllable and photography with it before the second. That shift of stress within one word family is the bridge to the stress topic later in this chapter.

TRE pointer: Most candidates skip phonetics because it looks technical, which is exactly why it is worth doing — 3 to 4 questions with far less competition than grammar. The 44 phonemes, 20 vowels, 24 consonants, 12 pure and 8 diphthongs set is the single most asked item, and it is four numbers. The minimal pair definition is the second. With −1/3 negative marking, a topic this finite deserves a week of proper attention.
60-Second Recap
- English has 26 letters but 44 phonemes in Received Pronunciation.
- 20 vowels — 12 pure vowels and 8 diphthongs — and 24 consonants.
- Voicing is vocal-cord vibration; it separates /p/ from /b/ and /s/ from /z/.
- A phoneme changes meaning; an allophone is a variant that does not.
- A minimal pair differs in exactly one phoneme: pin / bin.
- Phonemic transcription uses slant brackets; the stress mark precedes the stressed syllable.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many phonemes are there in English?
Forty-four in Received Pronunciation: twenty vowels and twenty-four consonants. The twenty vowels break into twelve pure vowels, also called monophthongs, and eight diphthongs. These four numbers are the most frequently asked single item in the phonetics topic.
What is a minimal pair?
Two words that differ in exactly one phoneme, such as pin and bin, or ship and sheep. Minimal pairs prove that two sounds are separate phonemes rather than variants of the same one, which makes them the basic working tool of phonemic analysis.
What is the difference between a phoneme and an allophone?
A phoneme is a sound unit that can change the meaning of a word, while an allophone is a variant of a phoneme that does not. The p in pin is aspirated and the p in spin is not, but swapping them changes no meaning.
Why does English spelling not match its pronunciation?
Because spelling was largely fixed while pronunciation continued to change, so the two systems drifted apart. The letters ough are pronounced six different ways in though, through, tough, cough, bough and thought. Phonetic symbols exist to describe sound independently of spelling.
