The Life of Birsa Munda
Birsa Munda was born on 15 November 1875 at Ulihatu in present Khunti district and died on 9 June 1900 in Ranchi jail at the age of twenty-four. In that short life he became a healer, a prophet and the leader of the Ulgulan.

Early life

Turning point

- Birsa began preaching around 1895 and was quickly seen as a healer and prophet
- Followers called him Dharti Aba, the father of the earth
- He was arrested in 1895 and sentenced to two years of imprisonment
- After release he rebuilt the movement with a sharper political edge

- He combined religious authority with a political demand, which earlier leaders had kept separate
- He gave the movement a slogan that everyone could repeat and remember
- He organised across villages rather than around one chief's estate
- He targeted the legal basis of outsider landholding, not just individual landlords
- He died young, which turned him from a leader into a lasting symbol
