Chero, Raksel and Ramgarh Kingdoms

Alongside the Nagvanshis, three other houses shaped medieval Jharkhand — the Raksels and then the Cheros in Palamu, and the Ramgarh Raj in the Hazaribagh belt. Medini Ray of Palamu is the single most asked name among them.

Raksels of Palamu

  • The Raksel house ruled the Palamu tract before the Cheros
  • They are linked by tradition with the Surguja side of the plateau
  • The Cheros displaced them around the sixteenth century
  • Raksel rule is the standard 'who came before' question for Palamu

Cheros of Palamu

  • The Chero house established itself in Palamu and held it against repeated Mughal pressure

  • He expanded Chero authority and is remembered for promoting agriculture and prosperity

Ramgarh Raj in detail

  • Founded in 1368 by Baghdeo Singh
  • Dalel Singh built a defensive palace and moved the capital from Badam to Ramgarh
  • Mukund Singh resisted East India Company taxation in 1772 and sought Maratha help
  • The Marathas did not sustain support and the Company installed its own nominee
  • The estate survived as a tributary zamindari and merged with India in the 1950s
  • Its later ruler Kamakhya Narain Singh remained a major political figure of the region

Other local houses worth a line

  • Kharagdiha Raj in the Giridih belt, an old chieftaincy of the north Chotanagpur tract
  • Singh dynasty of Singhbhum at Porahat, which dealt directly with the Ho country
  • Manbhum and Dhalbhum chiefs on the eastern edge toward Bengal
  • Most of these houses survived as zamindaris under British paramountcy after 1765
  • Their common feature is tribute to a larger power while keeping internal tribal arrangements intact
