Chhotanagpur Unnati Samaj, 1915

The Chhotanagpur Unnati Samaj, founded in 1915, is where the Jharkhand movement changes form. After a century of armed revolts, educated tribal youth built an organisation that used petitions, memoranda and constitutional politics instead.

Founded — 1915 | Founder — Rev. Joel Lakra with Theble Oraon, Bandi Oraon and Paul Dayal

Founding and purpose

  • Founded in 1915 in the Chotanagpur regionबार-बार पूछा जाता है
  • Founder — Rev. Joel Lakra, with Theble Oraon, Bandi Oraon and Paul Dayal
  • Aim — education and social reform among tribal communities
  • Method — petitions and memoranda, not armed action
  • It was built by the first generation of mission-educated tribal young men

Why 1915 is a turning point

  • Every earlier movement had been a revolt; this was an association
  • The CNT Act of 1908 had shown that law could deliver something, so law was worth using
  • Reforms in British India were opening a small space for constitutional representation
  • Education created leaders who could write in English and address officials directly
  • The demand shifts from land alone to political representation for the region

Its main activities

ActivityWhat it meant
Education workSchools, hostels and encouragement of tribal students
Social reformCampaign against liquor, debt and wasteful expenditure
PetitionsMemoranda to officials on land and tenancy grievances
RepresentationDemand for tribal seats and separate administrative attention
OrganisationBranch structure across Chotanagpur districts

What it led to

  • It became the base from which several tribal associations grew in the 1920s and 1930s
  • In 1938 these bodies merged into the Adivasi Mahasabha
  • The Mahasabha carried the same method into the demand for a separate province
  • The line runs unbroken from 1915 to the statehood movement of the 1990s
  • This is why exam answers on the Jharkhand movement should begin at 1915, not 1972

Names and years to lock in

  • 1915 — Chhotanagpur Unnati Samaj founded
  • Joel Lakra — founder
  • Theble Oraon, Bandi Oraon, Paul Dayal — associated founders
  • 1938 — Adivasi Mahasabha formed
  • Constitutional method — the defining feature of this phase

Associations of the same period

  • The Chhotanagpur Unnati Samaj was the earliest and the most influential of the group
  • Separate bodies grew among the Kisan Sabha and Catholic and Lutheran tribal networks
  • The Chhotanagpur Catholic Sabha and similar bodies worked on the same education agenda
  • Non-Christian tribal leaders formed their own associations in the same decades
  • Their competition delayed unity but widened the movement's social base
  • All of them merged into one platform in 1938 as the Adivasi Mahasabha

What this phase did not achieve

  • No separate province was won during the colonial period
  • Land alienation continued despite the CNT Act being on the statute book
  • Representation remained token and advisory rather than decisive
  • But the phase built leadership, literacy and organisation that later phases used

छोटानागपुर उन्नति समाज (1915) झारखंड आंदोलन का पहला संगठित मंच है। यहीं से आंदोलन हथियार छोड़कर संगठन, शिक्षा और अर्जी के रास्ते पर आता है।

Memory hook — Ek line me phase change — 1900 tak teer-kaman, 1915 se kalam. Aur saal ka jod — 1908 CNT Act, 1915 Unnati Samaj: kanoon mila to sanghathan bana.

Yahan confuse hote hain — Unnati Samaj ek rajnitik dal nahi tha.

Chhotanagpur Unnati Samaj was a political party  |   It was a social and educational association; the party came in 1949-50

Unnati Samaj ne alag rajya ki maang ki  |   Alag prant ki maang Adivasi Mahasabha ke daur me mazboot hui

Exam pointer — JPSC me is topic se 'Jharkhand andolan ke charan' wala prashn banta hai — sashastra se sangathanatmak charan tak. JSSC CGL aur JKCE me seedha — Unnati Samaj kab bana, kisne banaya. Ye chapter ka shuruati saal hai, isliye 1915 aur naam pakke rakho.
