Impact of Mining
Mining gave Jharkhand its industry, its towns and a large part of its revenue. It also gave the state its deepest problems — displacement without rehabilitation, degraded land and water, and the paradox of a rich region with poor people.

Economic impact
- Mining royalty and cess are a major source of the state's own revenue
- It built the industrial towns of Jamshedpur, Bokaro and Dhanbad
- It supports downstream steel, sponge iron, cement and power industries
- Direct employment is smaller than expected because mining is capital intensive
- Much value addition happens outside the state, so the state gets ore prices, not product prices
- Revenue depends on commodity cycles, so state finances swing with mineral prices
Social impact
- Displacement from mines, dams and townships is the state's oldest grievance
- Rehabilitation has often been partial, delayed or limited to cash payment
- Loss of land pushes families into migration as casual labour
- Traditional livelihoods based on farming and forest produce shrink around mines
- Health effects from dust, water contamination and unsafe abandoned pits are widespread
- Tribal communities bear a disproportionate share of these costs

The resource curse question
