Jharkhand Party and the JMM

The Jharkhand Party of 1949-50 carried the statehood demand into electoral politics and then collapsed into the Congress in 1963. The vacuum was filled in 1972 by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, which combined tribal, Sadan and mining-worker support.

Jharkhand Party — 1949-50, Jaipal Singh Munda | JMM — 1972, Shibu Soren, Binod Bihari Mahato, A. K. Roy

The Jharkhand Party

  • Formed by reorganising the Adivasi Mahasabha in 1949, launched publicly in 1950
  • President — Jaipal Singh Munda
  • The name dropped the word adivasi to widen the appeal beyond tribal voters
  • It became the main opposition party in the Bihar assembly in the 1950s
  • It submitted its case to the States Reorganisation Commission, which rejected a separate state
  • In 1963 the party merged with the Congressबार-बार पूछा जाता है

Why the merger mattered

  • The merger removed the only statewide vehicle for the statehood demand
  • Cadres felt betrayed, and multiple splinter parties appeared through the 1960s
  • The demand survived but had no single organisation for nearly a decade
  • This period is why the movement had to be rebuilt from a new social base

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha

  • Formed in 1972 by Shibu Soren, Binod Bihari Mahato and A. K. Roy
  • It joined three constituencies — tribal villages, Sadan and Kurmi cultivators, and mining workers
  • Its early campaigns targeted moneylenders, illegal land occupation and liquor
  • Binod Bihari Mahato became president and Shibu Soren general secretary in the early years
  • Later leaders include Nirmal Mahto and Tek Lal Mahto
  • The JMM became the main political vehicle of the statehood movement
