Physiographic Regions
Physiographic Regions
Jharkhand's surface is one plateau broken into distinct levels. The Pat region in the west is the highest, the Ranchi and Hazaribagh plateaus form the middle, the Damodar trough cuts between them, and the Rajmahal hills close the eastern edge.
Highest surface — Pat region, about 1,000 m | Ranchi plateau — about 700 m | Hazaribagh plateau — about 610 m
The main divisions
| Region | Approximate height | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Pat region | About 1,000 m | Western Ranchi plateau and Latehar side |
| Ranchi plateau | About 700 m | Largest single surface of the state |
| Hazaribagh plateau | About 610 m | North of the Damodar valley |
| Damodar trough | Low belt | Between the Ranchi and Hazaribagh plateaus |
| Santhal Pargana uplands | About 400 to 650 m | Deoghar, Dumka and Godda side |
| Rajmahal hills | About 150 to 200 m | Sahibganj and Pakur, eastern edge |
The Pat region
- The highest plateau surface of the Chotanagpur plateau
- Average height about 1,000 metres, with points rising above that
- Lies in the west, around Netarhat in Latehar and the Gumla side
- Flat-topped surfaces capped with laterite give the region its name
- Netarhat is called the queen of Chotanagpur for its climate and views
Ranchi and Hazaribagh plateaus
- The Ranchi plateau is the largest surface and carries the state capital
- It is gently undulating, with uplands called tanr and lowlands called don
- The Hazaribagh plateau lies north of the Damodar valley at a slightly lower level
- Both are old, worn-down surfaces of hard crystalline rock
- Rivers leave these surfaces in waterfalls, which is why Jharkhand has so many
Damodar trough and the eastern edge
- The Damodar valley is a long, low trough separating the two main plateaus
- It carries the state's Gondwana coal belt, including Jharia and Bokaro
- The Rajmahal hills in the east are built of basaltic trap rock
- They are lower than the plateau and end at the Ganga near Sahibganj
- The Santhal Pargana uplands lie between the Rajmahal hills and the main plateau
Points that get asked
- Highest plateau surface — Pat regionबार-बार पूछा जाता है
- Largest surface — Ranchi plateau
- Coal-bearing trough — Damodar valley
- Basaltic trap hills — Rajmahal
- Highest point of the state — Parasnath, which stands on the Hazaribagh side
Hills and ranges to name
- Parasnath — highest point of the state, in Giridih, a Jain pilgrimage site
- Netarhat — the best known point of the Pat region, in Latehar
- Dalma range — near Jamshedpur, known for its elephant sanctuary
- Rajmahal hills — eastern edge, in Sahibganj and Pakur
- Trikut hill — near Deoghar, a well known local landmark
- Ranges here are worn residual hills, not young folded mountains
पाट (Pat) का अर्थ है ऊंची और सपाट पठारी सतह। नेतरहाट इसी पाट क्षेत्र में है और इसे छोटानागपुर की रानी कहा जाता है।
Memory hook — Oonchai ka kram — Pat > Ranchi > Hazaribagh > Santhal Pargana > Rajmahal. Pashchim se poorab, oonchai girti jaati hai. Yahi ek line poore physiography ka jawab hai.
Yahan confuse hote hain — Sabse ooncha bindu aur sabse ooncha kshetra alag hain.
✗ Pat region has the highest point of Jharkhand | ✓ Pat is the highest surface; the highest point is Parasnath, 1,365 m
✗ Rajmahal pahadiyan granite ki hain | ✓ Rajmahal pahadiyan basaltic trap ki hain
Exam pointer — JPSC me physiographic divisions ka matching aur unki chattanon ka prashn aata hai, aksar khanij ke saath jod kar. JSSC CGL aur JTGLCCE me seedha — Pat kshetra kahan hai, Damodar trough kis beech me. Do table yaad kar lo to ye topic khatam.
