State Formation and Identity

Jharkhand became the 28th state of India on 15 November 2000, carved out of eighteen southern districts of Bihar under the Bihar Reorganisation Act, 2000. The date was chosen deliberately — it is the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda.

Why a separate state was demanded

• The region was resource-rich but income-poor — minerals left the region, revenue did not stay
• Land alienation — tribal land steadily passing to outsiders despite protective laws
• Displacement from mines, dams and steel plants without matching rehabilitation
• Cultural distance from the Bihar plains in language, festival calendar and social structure
• Weak political voice — the region was a minority bloc in the undivided Bihar assembly
• Movement leaders described the situation as internal colonialism of the plateau
