Cost Price, Selling Price

Cost Price and Selling Price

Cost price is what the seller paid; selling price is what the buyer paid. Profit or loss is always calculated on the cost price, never on the selling price. Getting that base right settles most SSC questions, because the wrong base is exactly what the distractor options are built from.

The multiplier method

Stop using the long formula. Convert the profit or loss percentage into a single multiplier and move between CP and SP in one step.

SP = CP x (100 + profit%)/100 and CP = SP x 100/(100 + profit%)

Profit or lossMultiplier CP to SPFraction
20% profit1.26/5
25% profit1.255/4
33.33% profit4/34/3
20% loss0.84/5
25% loss0.753/4

The articles-equated question

When the cost price of m articles equals the selling price of n articles, the profit percentage follows directly.

Profit% = (m - n)/n x 100

Solved examples

Example 1. An article bought for Rs 400 is sold for Rs 500. Find the profit percentage. Profit is 100 on a cost of 400, so 100 divided by 400 times 100 = 25 percent.

Example 2. The cost price of 15 articles equals the selling price of 12 articles. Find the profit percentage. Apply the formula: (15 minus 12) divided by 12, times 100 = 25 percent.

Example 3. An article is sold at 20 percent profit. Had it been sold for Rs 60 more, the profit would have been 30 percent. Find the cost price. The extra Rs 60 accounts for the extra 10 percent, so the cost price is 60 divided by 0.10 = Rs 600.

Example 4. A man sells two watches at Rs 1200 each, gaining 20 percent on one and losing 20 percent on the other. Find the net result. Equal selling prices with equal percentages always give a loss of x squared over 100, which is 4 percent loss.

Same SP, equal gain and loss of x%: always a loss of x squared over 100 percent

Traps SSC repeats

Profit percentage is profit divided by selling price  |   It is profit divided by cost price

Gain 20% and loss 20% cancel out  |   The net result is always a 4% loss

Profit ya loss hamesha cost price par nikalta hai. Agar sawaal me selling price par percentage diya ho to pehle CP nikalo, phir aage badho.

Exam pointer — SSC CGL Tier 1 asks 2 to 3 questions from the profit and loss chapter as a whole, and this topic supplies the base for all of them. The same-selling-price pair and the articles-equated type appear almost every year and are 25-second questions once the formula is memorised. Never compute them from first principles under the sectional timer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is profit percentage calculated on cost price or selling price?

Always on the cost price, unless the question explicitly says otherwise. SSC includes the selling-price-based answer among the options, so using the wrong base leads straight to a wrong option rather than to a value you cannot find.

What happens if two articles are sold at the same price with equal gain and loss percentages?

There is always a net loss, equal to the percentage squared divided by 100. At 20 percent each way the loss is 4 percent, whatever the selling price is.

If the cost price of 15 articles equals the selling price of 12, what is the profit?

The profit is 25 percent. Use the rule that profit percentage equals m minus n, divided by n, times 100, where m is the number of articles at cost price.

What is the fastest way to convert cost price to selling price?

Multiply by a single factor. A 20 percent profit means multiplying by 1.2, or by six-fifths, and a 20 percent loss means multiplying by 0.8, or four-fifths.

60-second recap

  • Profit and loss are always on the cost price.
  • Use one multiplier: 20% profit is 6/5, 20% loss is 4/5.
  • CP of m articles = SP of n articles gives profit (m-n)/n x 100.
  • Same SP with equal gain and loss of x% gives x squared over 100 percent loss.
  • A fixed rupee difference maps to the difference in the two percentages.

Multiplier

SP = CP x (100 + profit%)/100 और CP = SP x 100/(100 + profit%)

Profit ya loss hamesha cost price par nikalta hai. Agar sawaal me selling price par percentage diya ho to pehle CP nikalo, phir aage badho.

Frequently Asked Questions

60-second recap
