Profit and Loss Percent

Profit and Loss Percentage

Profit percentage is profit divided by cost price, times 100. The exam complicates this in three ways: selling different parts of a stock at different rates, comparing two transactions, and hiding the cost price inside a ratio. Each one is handled by fixing a convenient cost price such as 100.

Assume a cost price of 100

When the question gives only percentages and no rupee value, assume the cost price is 100. Every percentage then becomes a rupee figure and the arithmetic disappears.

No value given: take CP = 100 and read percentages as rupees

Selling a stock in parts

If part of a stock is sold at one profit and the rest at another, the overall profit is the weighted average of the two. Alligation solves it in one line.

Comparing the two percentages

GivenAskRelation
Profit is x% of CPProfit as % of SPx/(100 + x) x 100
Profit is y% of SPProfit as % of CPy/(100 - y) x 100
Loss is x% of CPNew SP for x% profitMultiply SP by (100+x)/(100-x)

Solved examples

Example 1. A trader buys 100 kg of wheat and sells 40 kg at 10 percent profit and the rest at 20 percent profit. Find the overall profit percentage. Weighted average = (40 times 10 + 60 times 20) divided by 100 = (400 + 1200)/100 = 16 percent.

Example 2. A profit of 25 percent on cost price is what percentage of the selling price? Take CP as 100, so profit is 25 and SP is 125. Then 25 divided by 125 times 100 = 20 percent.

Example 3. An article sold at a 10 percent loss would have fetched Rs 90 more had it been sold at a 5 percent profit. Find the cost price. The gap between minus 10 percent and plus 5 percent is 15 percent, so the cost price is 90 divided by 0.15 = Rs 600.

Example 4. By selling an article for Rs 720, a man loses 10 percent. At what price should he sell it to gain 15 percent? The cost price is 720 divided by 0.9 = Rs 800, so the new selling price is 800 times 1.15 = Rs 920.

Traps SSC repeats

25% profit on CP means 25% profit on SP  |   It is 20% of the selling price

Overall profit on two parts is the plain average  |   It is the weighted average by quantity

Jab sawaal me koi rupaya na diya ho, cost price 100 maan lo. Phir har percentage seedha rupaye ban jaata hai aur calculation khatam.

Exam pointer — This topic supplies 1 to 2 questions directly, usually the part-wise selling type or the two-price comparison. Both are 30-second questions with the assume-100 method. If a question mixes profit percentage with discount and marked price in one chain, expect it to take 50 seconds and decide early whether it is worth the sectional time.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I solve profit and loss questions with no rupee values?

Assume the cost price is 100. Every percentage then becomes a rupee amount, so a 25 percent profit simply means a profit of 25 and a selling price of 125. This removes almost all the arithmetic.

A 25 percent profit on cost is what percent of the selling price?

It is 20 percent. With cost price 100 the profit is 25 and the selling price is 125, so the profit as a share of the selling price is 25 out of 125.

How do I find the overall profit when a stock is sold in two parts?

Take the weighted average of the two profit percentages, using the quantities as weights. The plain average is correct only when the two quantities are equal.

How do I find the new selling price for a target profit?

First recover the cost price from the given selling price and its profit or loss percentage, then multiply the cost price by the new multiplier for the target profit.

60-second recap

  • No values given: assume CP = 100.
  • Profit x% of CP equals x/(100+x) percent of SP.
  • Part-wise selling needs a weighted average, not a plain one.
  • Recover CP first, then apply the new multiplier.
  • A fixed rupee gap equals the gap between the two percentages.

Cost price 100

Jab sawaal me koi rupaya na diya ho, cost price 100 maan lo. Phir har percentage seedha rupaye ban jaata hai aur calculation khatam.

Frequently Asked Questions

60-second recap
