State Symbols of Jharkhand

Jharkhand's official symbols are the elephant, the koel, the sal tree and the palash flower. The state emblem in use today was adopted on 15 August 2020 and replaced the original 2000 emblem, which is exactly where most candidates lose the mark.

Animal — Elephant | Bird — Koel | Tree — Sal | Flower — Palash

The four natural symbols

SymbolNameWhy it was chosen
State animalIndian elephantDalma and Palamu are major elephant habitats
State birdKoelGives the region the name Koel-anchal; two rivers are named Koel
State treeSalDominant forest species; sacred in tribal ritual
State flowerPalashFlame-red bloom of the plateau spring; used in Sarhul

The state emblem

  • Current emblem adopted on 15 August 2020
  • Chosen through a public design competition announced in January 2020
  • Outer ring — elephants on green, for strength and forest wealth
  • Middle ring — palash flowers, for the state's flora and culture
  • Inner ring — human figures in traditional Jharkhandi painting style
  • Centre — the Lion Capital of Ashoka with Satyameva Jayate
  • The 2000-2020 emblem had the Ashoka Chakra ringed by four stylised letter 'J' shapes

Symbol-linked facts that get asked

  • Sal is called sakhua locally and its leaves are used for making patal plates
  • Palash is the flower of Sarhul, the biggest tribal spring festival
  • The elephant is also the flagship species of Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary near Jamshedpur
  • Koel lends its name to the North Koel and South Koel rivers
  • Jharkhand's forest wealth is why the state animal and tree are both forest species

Do not mix these up

  • State flower is palash; the state tree is sal — both are forest species but different categories
  • The emblem changed in 2020; the four natural symbols did not change
  • Jharkhand's state animal is the elephant, not the tiger — the tiger belongs to Palamu Tiger Reserve, which is a protected area, not a symbol

Papers often place a Jharkhand symbol beside the national one and ask which pair is correctly matched. Learn the two columns together and the trap stops working.

साल (Sal) को स्थानीय भाषा में सखुआ कहते हैं और पलाश (Palash) को टेसू या ढाक भी कहा जाता है। सरहुल में पलाश के फूल का प्रयोग होता है।

Sal and palash in everyday Jharkhand

  • Sal dominates the state's forests and its flowering marks the start of the Sarhul season
  • Sal leaves are stitched into patal and dona — a large rural non-timber income source
  • Sal seed oil and sal resin (dhuna) are traded minor forest produce
  • Palash blooms in Phagun and gives the plateau its red-orange spring colour
  • Palash flowers are traditionally boiled to make natural colour used at Holi
  • The sarna grove, where sal trees stand, is the sacred worship space of tribal villages

Memory hook — Char prateek yaad rakhne ka jod — KO-SA-PA-HA: KOel (bird), SAl (tree), PAlash (flower), HAathi (elephant, animal). Chaaron jungle se jude hain — isliye 'Jharkhand' naam sahi baithta hai.

Yahan confuse hote hain — Emblem ki tarikh sabse zyada galat hoti hai.

State emblem adopted 15 November 2000  |   Current emblem adopted 15 August 2020

State animal is tiger  |   State animal is elephant

Exam pointer — JSSC CGL, JTET aur Jharkhand Police me ye topic sabse zyada aata hai — seedha match-the-following ya one-liner, aur ye guaranteed marks hain. JPSC Prelims me kam aata hai par jab aata hai to emblem ke elements ya adoption year par aata hai, sirf naam par nahi.
