Order and Ranking

Ranking questions place people in a row and ask for a position or a total. Two formulas cover almost all of them: position from the left plus position from the right minus one gives the total, and the total minus a position plus one gives the position from the other end.

The two core formulas

Total = position from left + position from right - 1

Position from right = total - position from left + 1

The minus one and the plus one exist because the person themselves is counted twice or not at all. Every wrong answer in this topic is an off-by-one error, so write the formula before substituting rather than reasoning it out each time.

Counting between two people

Number of people between two positions = difference of positions - 1

Total when both ends are given with n people between = left rank + right rank + n

When the two ranks overlap

Sometimes the ranks given from the two ends add to more than the number of people, which means the two positions overlap. In that case the number of people counted twice equals the sum of the ranks minus the total, and questions often ask for exactly that overlap.

Overlap = left rank + right rank - total

Solved examples

Example 1. In a row of 40 students, A is 12th from the left. What is his position from the right? Apply the formula: 40 minus 12 plus 1 = 29th.

Example 2. A is 12th from the left and 15th from the right. How many students are in the row? The total is 12 plus 15 minus 1 = 26.

Example 3. A is 7th from the left and B is 15th from the left. How many students sit between them? The difference is 8, so the number between is 7.

Example 4. A is 10th from the left, B is 12th from the right, and 3 students sit between them. Find the total. It is 10 plus 12 plus 3 = 25.

Example 5. In a class of 50, a boy ranks 18th from the top. What is his rank from the bottom? It is 50 minus 18 plus 1 = 33rd.
