Puzzles
Puzzles
A puzzle links people with two or more attributes, such as a name with a floor and a colour. Draw a grid with people as rows and attributes as columns, mark each definite clue, and use crosses to eliminate. The answer emerges from elimination rather than from deduction in your head.
The grid method
Rows for people, columns for attributes, ticks for confirmed and crosses for ruled out
A tick in one cell puts crosses across the rest of that row and column. This mechanical step is what makes a puzzle solvable in a minute rather than four, and it also makes an error visible rather than silent.
Comparison puzzles
For puzzles ordering people by height, age or marks, draw a single line and place each person on it as the clues arrive. Convert every clue into the same direction, such as always taller than, before placing anyone.
Convert all comparisons into one direction before building the order
Floor puzzles
Number the floors from the bottom and write them vertically. A clue such as two floors above is then a simple count on the diagram rather than a mental adjustment.
Solved examples
Example 1. A is taller than B, B is taller than C, and D is taller than A. Who is the tallest? Converting all clues to taller than gives the order D, A, B, C, so the tallest is D.
Example 2. In the same group, who is the second shortest? The order from the bottom is C, B, A, D, so the second shortest is B.
Example 3. Five people live on floors 1 to 5. P lives on floor 2 and Q lives two floors above P. Which floor is Q on? Counting up two from floor 2 gives floor 4.
Example 4. If R lives above Q in the same building, which floor must R occupy? Only floor 5 remains above floor 4, so R lives on floor 5.
When to skip
Under a 15-minute sectional timer, a puzzle set is worth starting only if the first two clues place someone definitely. If the opening clues are all relative, the puzzle needs trial cases, which costs two minutes and risks the whole section.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ Track a puzzle mentally to save time | ✓ The grid is faster and shows errors
✗ Mix taller than and shorter than clues as given | ✓ Convert every comparison to one direction first
Grid banane me das second lagte hain aur dimaag me rakhne me do minute barbaad hote hain. Hamesha likh kar hal karo.
Exam pointer — Puzzles appear in about 1 question per shift in Tier 1, and they are far lighter here than in banking exams. Comparison and floor puzzles take 40 seconds with a diagram and are worth attempting. A full multi-attribute grid puzzle is the single best skip candidate in the reasoning section.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the grid method for reasoning puzzles?
Draw a table with people as rows and attributes as columns, tick confirmed matches and cross out the rest of that row and column. The remaining cells give the answer by elimination.
How do I solve comparison puzzles about height or age?
Convert every clue into a single direction, such as taller than, then place each person on one line. Mixing directions is what makes these questions feel harder than they are.
Should I attempt every puzzle in SSC CGL Tier 1?
No. Attempt comparison and floor puzzles, which take about 40 seconds. A multi-attribute grid puzzle requiring trial cases is the best skip candidate in the section.
Are SSC puzzles as hard as banking puzzles?
No. SSC CGL puzzles are usually single-attribute and involve four or five people, while banking puzzles often chain three attributes across eight people.

Grid
Rows for people, columns for attributes, ticks for confirmed and crosses for ruled out
Convert all comparisons into one direction before building the order
Floor
Example 1. A, B से लंबा है, B, C से लंबा है, और D, A से लंबा है।
Example 2.
Example 3.
Example 4.
Grid banane me das second lagte hain aur dimaag me rakhne me do minute barbaad hote hain. Hamesha likh kar hal karo.
Frequently Asked Questions
60-second recap
- Multi-attribute grids section
