Shadow Based Direction
Shadow Based Direction
Shadow questions rest on one fact: the shadow always falls opposite the sun. In the morning the sun is in the east, so shadows point west. In the evening the sun is in the west, so shadows point east. Everything else in the topic follows from that single line.
The two base rules
Morning: sun in the east, shadow to the west
Evening: sun in the west, shadow to the east
At noon the sun is overhead and the shadow is negligible, so a question set at noon cannot be answered from shadow direction and is included only as a trap option.
Deducing the facing direction
Once you know where the shadow points, use the position given in the question. If the shadow falls to the person's right in the morning, then west is on their right, which means they are facing north.
| Time | Shadow points | Shadow on right | Shadow on left |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | West | Facing north | Facing south |
| Evening | East | Facing south | Facing north |
Shadows of two people facing each other
When two people face each other, their shadows fall the same way, because the sun's position does not change between them. Only their left and right differ, since they are facing opposite directions. Reading that difference correctly is what the harder version of this question tests.
Solved examples
Example 1. In the morning, a man's shadow falls to his right. Which direction is he facing? The shadow points west, so west is on his right, meaning he faces north.
Example 2. In the evening, a girl's shadow falls to her left. Which way is she facing? The shadow points east, so east is on her left, meaning she faces north.
Example 3. At sunrise, two friends stand facing each other and one has his shadow falling to his left. Which way is he facing? The shadow points west, so west is on his left, meaning he faces south.
Example 4. In the evening, a pole's shadow falls exactly towards a man standing to the east of it. Is this consistent? Yes, because evening shadows point east, so the arrangement is consistent.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ Morning shadows point east, towards the sun | ✓ Shadows always point away from the sun, so west in the morning
✗ A noon question can be answered from the shadow | ✓ At noon the shadow is negligible and gives no direction
Chhaya hamesha suraj ke ulti taraf padti hai. Subah suraj poorab me, isliye chhaya pashchim me - bas yahi ek line yaad rakho.
Exam pointer — Shadow questions appear in some shifts as part of the direction group and take only 20 seconds once the base rule is fixed. The morning and evening variants are set with equal frequency and the wrong-time answer is always among the options, so read the time of day before you read anything else in the question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which direction does a shadow fall in the morning?
Towards the west, because the sun rises in the east and a shadow always falls opposite the sun. In the evening the reverse holds and shadows point east.
If my shadow falls to my right in the morning, which way am I facing?
North. The morning shadow points west, so if west is on your right, you must be facing north.
Can shadow questions be set at noon?
Not meaningfully. At noon the sun is nearly overhead and the shadow is negligible, so no direction can be deduced. Noon appears only as a distractor.
Do these questions change for the southern hemisphere?
SSC questions assume the standard Indian setting, so use the east-sunrise and west-sunset rules without any hemisphere adjustment.

Example 1.
Example 2.
Example 3.
Example 4.
Chhaya hamesha suraj ke ulti taraf padti hai. Subah suraj poorab me, isliye chhaya pashchim me - bas yahi ek line yaad rakho.
Frequently Asked Questions
60-second recap
