Blood Relation Basics

A blood relation question describes a family in words and asks how two people are related. Draw a family tree with generations on separate levels, mark males and females, and read the answer off the diagram. Solving these in your head is where candidates lose the mark.

The family tree method

1. Draw each generation on its own horizontal level.
2. Join a married couple with a horizontal line and a child with a vertical line.
3. Mark gender with a plus for male and a minus for female where it is stated.
4. Leave gender blank where the question does not state it, because names are not proof.

The photograph question

The phrase to unpack is always the innermost one. In a statement such as the daughter of the only son of my mother, start from my mother, then the only son of my mother, which is the speaker himself, and then his daughter.

Example 1. Pointing to a photograph, a man said, she is the daughter of the only son of my mother. How is she related to him? The only son of his mother is the man himself, so she is his daughter.

Example 2. A is the brother of B, B is the sister of C, and C is the father of D. How is A related to D? A is a brother of D's father, so A is D's uncle.

Example 3. A woman said, his mother is the only daughter of my mother. How is she related to him? The only daughter of her mother is the woman herself, so she is his mother.

What is the best method for blood relation questions?

How do I decode a phrase like the only son of my mother?
