Varn Vichar: Vowels, Consonants and Place of Articulation

Grammar supplies roughly 25 of the Part-III Hindi questions, and varn vichar alone accounts for about 2 of them. The count of vowels and consonants, their classification and their place of articulation are asked directly, so they have to be fixed as numbers rather than approximated.

Counting the Alphabet

ClassCountLetters
Vowels11अ आ इ ई उ ऊ ऋ ए ऐ ओ औ
Consonants33क् to ह्
Standard total4411 + 33
Practical total5244 + अं अः + ड़ ढ़ + क्ष त्र ज्ञ श्र

This is where the commonest confusion arises. The standard Hindi alphabet has 44 letters, but the practical Devanagari count is taken as 52, because anusvar, visarg, the two flapped consonants and four conjunct consonants are added to it.

Hindi has 52 basic vowels and consonants  |   The basic letters are 44; the count of 52 adds अं, अः, ड़, ढ़ and four conjuncts

The conjuncts are not basic letters at all — क्ष is क् + ष, त्र is त् + र, ज्ञ is ज् + ञ and श्र is श् + र. Papers regularly ask for exactly this splitting.

Classifying the Vowels

  • Short vowels — अ, इ, उ, ऋ. They take less time to pronounce.
  • Long vowels — आ, ई, ऊ, ए, ऐ, ओ, औ.
  • Compound vowels — ए, ऐ, ओ, औ, since each is formed from two vowels.
  • Pluta — a drawn-out vowel used in calling out, as in ओ३म्.

Two points are missed most often. ऋ counts as a short vowel, and अं and अः are not vowels at all — they are called ayogvah, because they are neither fully vowels nor consonants.

Consonants and Place of Articulation

PlaceLetters
Kanthya (throat)अ आ, क group, ह, visarg
Talavya (palate)इ ई, च group, य, श
Murdhanya (roof)ऋ, ट group, र, ष
Dantya (teeth)त group, ल, स
Oshthya (lips)उ ऊ, प group
Dantoshthya

The consonants of the five groups are called sparsh, य र ल व are antahsth, and श ष स ह are ushm. The fifth letter of every group — ङ, ञ, ण, न, म — is nasal.

आसान तरीका: उच्चारण करते समय जीभ जिस भाग को छूती है, वही उस वर्ण का उच्चारण स्थान है। क वर्ग बोलिए, आवाज़ गले से आएगी — इसलिए कंठ्य।

TRE pointer: Hold the count in two halves — 44 standard, 52 practical — because the question is set both ways. ऋ is short and अं, अः are ayogvah are the two facts most often got wrong. With five options and negative marking, this level of precision is what separates candidates.

60-Second Recap

  • 11 vowels, 33 consonants, 44 letters in the standard alphabet.
  • The practical count of 52 adds अं, अः, ड़, ढ़ and क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ, श्र.
  • Short vowels are अ, इ, उ, ऋ; the rest are long.
  • अं and अः are ayogvah, not vowels.
  • य र ल व are antahsth and श ष स ह are ushm consonants.
  • The fifth letter of each group is a nasal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many letters does the Hindi alphabet have?

Forty-four by the standard count, made up of eleven vowels and thirty-three consonants. The practical Devanagari count is fifty-two, which also includes anusvar, visarg, ड़, ढ़ and the four conjunct consonants. Answer according to the wording used in the question itself.

Why are क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र not basic letters?

Because each of them is formed by joining two consonants — क् and ष give क्ष, त् and र give त्र, ज् and ञ give ज्ञ, and श् and र give श्र. A basic letter is one that cannot be broken down further, so these are classed as conjunct consonants.

What does ayogvah mean?

It refers to अं, the anusvar, and अः, the visarg. They are neither pure vowels nor consonants, since they are pronounced only with the support of a vowel but are not counted among the vowels. Anusvar is nasal and visarg comes from the throat.

Which consonants are nasal?

The fifth consonant of each sparsh group — ङ, ञ, ण, न and म. Air passes through the nose while pronouncing them, which is why they are also called panchmakshar or anunasik consonants.
