SSC Introduces New 'Sliding Mechanism' to Optimize Vacancy Fillings: Fix vs. Float Explained

By Exam Atlas

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) has taken a major, candidate-friendly step to resolve a perennial problem: unfilled vacancies. Through an official notification dated March 3, 2026, the commission announced the introduction of a new Sliding Mechanism for allocating posts and departments to successful candidates. Let's dive deep into what this mechanism is, how it works, and why the terms 'FIX' and 'FLOAT' are now crucial for every SSC aspirant.

Why the Need for a Sliding Mechanism?

Every year, SSC conducts large-scale exams to recruit staff for various Ministries and Departments. However, a significant number of seats remain vacant because selected candidates either skip the Document Verification (DV) process or simply do not join the department after selection. Because SSC cannot maintain a waiting list for multi-tier examinations, these unfilled vacancies are wasted and rolled over to the next examination cycle.

To address this issue, maximize the filling of vacancies, and give fair opportunities to meritorious candidates, SSC has introduced the Sliding Mechanism. It allows for a single round of reallocation for these unutilized seats.

Step-by-Step Breakdown of the New Process

1. First Round of Tentative Allocation (FRTA)

Initially, candidates will be tentatively allotted a post based on their merit and the options they submitted (as per the usual practice). This is known as the First Round of Tentative Allocation.

2. Identity Verification (IV) via Aadhar

Once the FRTA is out, shortlisted candidates will be given a limited window of approximately 10 days. During this window, candidates must physically visit their respective Regional Director (RD) Office for Identity Verification (IV) using Aadhar Authentication.

⚠️ Important: Failing to appear for IV within these 10 days will result in the candidate being marked 'Absent', and they will be eliminated from further processing.

The Big Choice: FIX vs. FLOAT

During the Identity Verification stage, candidates will be asked to exercise one of two options. This is the core of the Sliding Mechanism:

  • ✅ The 'FIX' Option Choosing FIX means you are fully satisfied with the post allotted to you in the First Round. You accept it as final and will not be considered for any upgradation. If a FIX candidate later decides not to join, the post goes vacant and moves to the next year's recruitment cycle.
  • 🔄 The 'FLOAT' Option Choosing FLOAT indicates you are willing to accept the current post, but you want to be considered for an upgradation to a higher-preference post if vacancies open up (due to other candidates skipping IV).

How the Sliding Round Works

After the 10-day IV window closes, SSC will calculate how many vacancies opened up due to absentees. They will then conduct one single sliding round of allocation based strictly on merit-cum-preference for all candidates who selected the FLOAT option.

Rule to Remember: If you choose FLOAT and get upgraded, you MUST join the newly allotted post. If you fail to do so, you will forfeit both your newly allocated post and your previously allocated post.

Conclusion

This Sliding Mechanism is a brilliant move by the Staff Selection Commission. It minimizes the wastage of vacancies and ensures that deserving candidates get their preferred posts based on merit. SSC has announced that a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SoP) will be published soon. Until then, aspirants should familiarize themselves with the FIX and FLOAT concepts to make informed decisions during their selection process.
