Current Affairs 30 September 2026: 20 Exam-Ready Facts

Two numbers decide today's paper. India sat at 38th in the WIPO Global Innovation Index 2026, released on 29 September, and India's women's 4x400m relay quartet ran 3:29.69 in Aichi-Nagoya to take the country's first athletics gold of these Asian Games. Both are prime one-mark material.

Everything below is from the last 24 hours, cross-checked against WIPO, PIB, Akashvani and the Supreme Court Collegium resolution. Where a source was thin, you will see a (verify) tag instead of a confident claim. Each fact carries the exam it matters most for.

  • The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meeting of 28 September 2026, recommended three High Court Chief Justices for elevation to the Supreme Court: Justice Sunita Agarwal (Gujarat HC), Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya (Delhi HC) and Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh (Telangana HC). (BPSC / BSSC / All exams)

  • Z.T. Lalrithangi, known as Pi Mari-i, of Sangau village in Lawngtlai district, Mizoram, was picked for FAO's 100 Women Heroes in Agrifood Systems, one of only two from India out of more than 600 nominations across 131 countries. Science & Defence

Bihar-Jharkhand Special

  • CJI Justice Surya Kant inaugurated India's first Victim Rights Centre at the Bihar State Legal Services Authority in Patna, a 12-month pilot giving victims a single point of entry across agencies. A steering committee under Justice Ajeet Kumar will oversee it, and a transgender helpline was launched alongside. (BPSC / BSSC / Bihar Police)
  • Bihar DGP Vinay Kumar, a 1991-batch IPS officer, applied for voluntary retirement on 25 September 2026 and was appointed Chief Information Commissioner of Bihar. The post had been vacant since Tripurari Sharan's term ended on 31 July 2026. (BPSC / BSSC / Bihar Police)
  • Preeta Verma, also 1991-batch IPS, is holding charge as acting DGP of Bihar, the first woman to do so. A panel of IPS officers is being sent to UPSC, which will shortlist three names for the Chief Minister to pick from. (BPSC / BSSC / Bihar Police)
  • Bihar's Chief Minister is Samrat Choudhary, the state's 24th Chief Minister since 15 April 2026 and the first BJP leader to hold the office, after Nitish Kumar resigned to contest the Rajya Sabha elections. Deputy Chief Ministers are Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav; the Chief Secretary is Pratyaya Amrit. (BPSC / BSSC / Bihar Police / BTET)
  • Bihar Vidya Saathi runs in 700 Saraswati Vidya Niketan model schools across all 38 districts, giving classes 9 to 12 round-the-clock live teacher support aimed at JEE and NEET, with roughly 3 lakh students and 75,000 teachers on the platform. (BTET / BPSC / BSSC)
  • In Jharkhand, the state government's list of 44 cancelled recruitment examinations conducted since 2014 remains the dominant story for aspirants. It covers JPSC and JSSC papers run through the agency TDPL, including the JSSC Combined Graduate Level exam, and a reform committee under senior IAS officer Amitabh Kaushal was asked to report within two months. (JSSC / JPSC / JTET)
  • Jharkhand also gets a bench angle today: Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, now Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court and recommended for the Supreme Court, spent much of his judicial career at the Jharkhand High Court. (JPSC / JSSC)

One honest caveat for Jharkhand candidates. The 44-exam cancellation list keeps getting amended as court orders land, so check the JSSC and JPSC websites before you quote a number in a descriptive answer. Treat the figure as correct for objective papers and as contestable in an interview.

What to do with this before tonight

Do not revise all twenty facts. Pick the six that repeat across papers: the Mega Ports section number, the MDR rate and its 15 October start, India's 38th place in the GII, the 4x400m timing, the Patna Victim Rights Centre and Bihar's current Chief Minister. Those six carry the highest hit rate for SSC, Railway, Banking, BPSC, BSSC and JSSC papers.

One last warning. Several aggregator sites published a completely different set of "29 September" facts today, including a metro line through iron-ore tunnels and a naval commissioning that had already happened in 2025. If a fact is not on a government site or a named newspaper, do not carry it into your notes.

Today's 15 objective questions built on exactly these facts are live as a separate quiz on the platform, with answers, one-line explanations and topic-wise accuracy after you submit. Read the facts here, then go score yourself.
