Dienes' Principles
Zoltan Dienes studied how children build mathematical concepts through structured play with materials. He gave four principles of concept learning and six stages of the learning process, and his base-ten blocks remain the standard material for teaching place value.
The four principles

Perceptual variability is also called multiple embodiment and is the single most quoted of the four. It is the reason a teacher should not teach fractions only with circles: a child taught with one material ties the concept to that material.
The six stages of learning a concept
- Free play — unstructured handling of the material.
- Games — playing with rules, discovering that rules can change.
- Searching for commonality — noticing what different examples share.
- Representation — a picture or diagram of the shared structure.
- Symbolisation — describing the representation in symbols.
- Formalisation — the rule, the proof, the ordering of results.
Notice that free play comes first and formal symbols come last — the reverse of most Indian classrooms, where the symbol is written on the board in the first minute.
Why the principles matter in Classes 1-5
Together the four principles argue against a single-material, single-example, rule-first classroom. A concept met in one form, with one set of numbers, stated as a rule on the board, gives the child a memory rather than an idea. The same concept met in play, in several materials, with the numbers varied, and named only after the children have noticed the commonality, produces understanding that survives a change of question.
Dienes blocks
Units, longs (tens), flats (hundreds) and blocks (thousands) make place value physical. Ten units can be traded for one long, which is exactly what carrying means. A child who has traded blocks understands regrouping in subtraction; a child who has only been shown the small 1 above the column does not.

Dienes appears in one question most cycles, and it is nearly always perceptual variability under the name multiple embodiment. The trap swaps the two variability principles, so fix them by the word: perceptual is about what the child perceives, that is the material, while mathematical is about the numbers and variables used. The six stages are asked as a sequence question, where the trap places symbolisation before representation, or free play late in the list.
