Error Analysis in Maths

Children's mathematical errors are systematic. Each wrong answer is produced by a rule the child is consistently applying, and finding that rule is what error analysis means. In CTET, this is the highest-yield idea in the entire Maths pedagogy section.

The standard errors and the rules behind them

None of these is carelessness. Each is a rule that worked in an earlier context and has been carried where it does not apply — negative transfer, in the language of the CDP section.

How to conduct error analysis

  1. Collect several pieces of the child's work, not one answer.
  2. Look for the pattern: are the errors of the same kind?
  3. Ask the child to think aloud while solving one problem. The rule usually reveals itself in the first sentence.
  4. Name the misconception precisely: not 'weak in subtraction' but 'does not regroup across a zero'.
  5. Design a task in which the faulty rule visibly fails, using concrete material.
  6. Re-test with different numbers to confirm the rule has changed.

Kinds of errors

  • Conceptual — the idea itself is wrong, such as believing multiplication always increases.
  • Procedural — the steps are misapplied, such as forgetting to regroup.
  • Careless or slip — occasional and not repeated; these need no remediation.
  • Language-based — the mathematics is sound but the problem was misread.

Only the first two need reteaching, and they need different treatment: a conceptual error requires returning to concrete material, while a procedural error can be fixed by working through the steps aloud.

Error analysis is asked 2-3 times across the Maths pedagogy and CDP sections, always through a described error. The correct option interprets the error as evidence of the child's thinking and proposes a diagnostic or concrete response; wrong options prescribe repetition, punishment, extra homework or informing the parents. Memorise the standard errors in the table above, because CTET reuses the same ones — the 42 minus 17 subtraction error and the 1/2 plus 1/3 fraction error appear constantly.
