Language of Mathematics
Mathematics has its own vocabulary, syntax and symbols, and a child must learn them as deliberately as any language. Much of what looks like weakness in mathematics in Classes 1 to 5 is in fact a language problem, especially where the child's home language differs from the language of the textbook.
Three language layers a child must handle
- Everyday words with a special meaning — difference, table, product, volume, odd, even, similar, root. A child who knows only the everyday sense of difference reads 'find the difference' as 'say how they are unlike'.
- Technical terms — numerator, quotient, perpendicular, perimeter. These must be taught and used repeatedly, not assumed.
- Symbols and syntax — the equals sign, the order of terms, brackets. Children often read = as 'the answer comes next', which is why 4 + __ = 9 confuses them.
The word problem barrier
A word problem asks the child to do three things at once: read the language, build a mental model of the situation, and choose an operation. Failure at any one looks identical on paper. The teacher's diagnostic question is therefore 'tell me the story in your own words' — a child who can retell it but not solve it has a mathematics problem, while one who cannot retell it has a language problem.

These cues help, but teaching them as fixed rules backfires: 'Ravi has 3 more than Sita, Ravi has 12, how many does Sita have' contains 'more' and needs subtraction. Understanding the situation must come before the keyword.
Multilingual classrooms
Where the home language differs from the medium of instruction, NCF 2005 and NEP 2020 both permit and encourage explanation in the child's own language. Let a child reason aloud in her home language and record the answer in the school language; forcing the school language at the reasoning stage suppresses the mathematics along with the words.

This topic gives one or two questions, usually as a classroom situation about a child who computes well but fails at word problems. The correct answer identifies a language or comprehension difficulty and suggests retelling, discussion or the home language, never more computation practice. Another item asks about the keyword strategy; the CTET-preferred position is that keywords help but understanding the situation must come first, because keyword rules fail on comparison problems.

Why do children fail at word problems even when their calculation is correct?
Because a word problem requires reading the language, understanding the situation and choosing an operation before any calculation begins. A breakdown at the reading or modelling stage looks the same on paper as a computational error.
How should a teacher help a child struggling with word problems?
Ask the child to retell the problem in her own words, act it out with objects, and identify what is given and what is asked, before any number work. This separates the language difficulty from the mathematical one.
Can children use their home language in a maths class?
