Nature of Mathematics

Mathematics is the study of pattern, quantity, shape and relationship, expressed in a precise symbolic language. Its content is abstract, its method is logical, and its structure is cumulative — every idea rests on the one before. These three features decide how it must be taught in Classes 1 to 5.

What makes mathematics different from other subjects

  • Abstract — the number 5 exists nowhere as an object; it is an idea drawn from five things. This is why concrete material is not a decoration but a necessity.
  • Precise — a term means exactly one thing, and a small change in wording changes the meaning entirely.
  • Hierarchical — division depends on multiplication, which depends on addition. A gap anywhere blocks everything above it.
  • Logical — a result is accepted because it follows, not because a teacher said so.
  • Its own language — symbols, terms and conventions that must be taught explicitly.

Aims of teaching mathematics at the primary stage

  1. Develop number sense and confidence in handling quantity.
  2. Build the ability to reason, generalise and justify — NCF 2005 calls this mathematisation of the child's thought.
  3. Develop the ability to solve problems from everyday life.
  4. Develop spatial understanding and measurement sense.
  5. Build a positive attitude and remove the fear of mathematics.

NCF 2005 states the higher aim of school mathematics as the mathematisation of the child's thinking, and warns against a curriculum in which children learn procedures they cannot explain.

Maths anxiety

Fear of mathematics is manufactured in the classroom: speed drills, public correction, marking without explanation and a teacher who says the subject is hard. NCF 2005 identifies fear and failure in mathematics as the central problem of the subject in India. A CTET question on this always has an answer that reduces pressure and increases understanding.
