Interior of the Earth and Plate Tectonics

This topic gives 2 questions and is where Part-III goes well past the General Studies treatment. Plate tectonics explains why the Himalayas are rising and why earthquakes happen where they do, and a teacher is expected to explain the mechanism rather than name the layers.

The continental crust is called SIAL for silica and aluminium and the oceanic crust SIMA for silica and magnesium. The NIFE core is named for nickel and iron. These three names are asked directly.

Plate Tectonics

The earth's outer shell is broken into rigid plates that float on the semi-molten layer below and move a few centimetres a year. Almost all earthquakes, volcanoes and young mountains occur at their boundaries.

The Himalayas are the standard Indian example: the Indian plate is still moving north into the Eurasian plate, which is why the range is still rising and why the region is earthquake-prone. That single explanation answers several possible questions.

Earthquakes

  • The focus is the point of origin inside the earth; the epicentre lies directly above it on the surface.
  • Intensity is recorded on the Richter scale using a seismograph.
  • Three wave types: P waves arrive first and travel through solid and liquid; S waves follow and pass only through solids; L or surface waves arrive last and cause most damage.
  • A tsunami is caused by an undersea earthquake, not by wind.

That S waves cannot pass through liquids is how scientists deduced that the outer core is molten — a genuinely satisfying piece of reasoning and one an Honours-level paper may ask.

Volcanoes and the Ring of Fire

A volcano is an opening through which molten material reaches the surface. Volcanoes are classed as active, dormant or extinct.

Most of the world's volcanoes and earthquakes lie along the Pacific Ring of Fire, which follows the plate boundaries around that ocean. In India, Barren Island in the Andamans is the only active volcano.

The point to carry into a classroom is that all of this is one explanation, not several: plates move, and mountains, earthquakes, volcanoes and trenches are all consequences of that movement. Teaching them as separate topics is what makes geography feel like a list rather than a subject.

Why are the Himalayas still rising?

Because the Indian plate continues to move northward into the Eurasian plate, and the collision keeps folding and lifting the rock between them. This also makes the whole region seismically active, which is why earthquakes are frequent across north India.

What is the difference between focus and epicentre?

The focus is the point inside the earth where an earthquake originates. The epicentre is the point on the surface directly above the focus, and it usually suffers the greatest damage. The two definitions are regularly reversed in options.

How do we know the outer core is liquid?

Because S waves, which can travel only through solids, do not pass through it, while P waves, which travel through both solids and liquids, do. The shadow zone that S waves leave on the far side of the earth revealed a molten outer core.
