Maps, Scale and the Branches of Geography
Geography gives about 25 of the Part-III Social Science questions. This opening topic covers the tools of the subject — maps, scale and direction — which the General Studies paper never touches and which a teacher uses in every geography lesson.

The division that matters is physical against human geography, and a question may give a subject — population density, river erosion, industry — and ask which branch studies it.
Map, Globe and Sketch
- A globe is a true model of the earth but cannot show detail or be carried easily.
- A map is a flat representation, drawn to scale, and can show any level of detail.
- A sketch is drawn from memory and is not to scale.
- A plan is a drawing of a small area on a large scale, as of a building.
- An atlas is a bound collection of maps.
The scale-or-no-scale distinction settles most questions here: a sketch has no scale, a plan and a map do. Every flat map distorts something, because a curved surface cannot be flattened without stretching — which is why different projections exist.

Scale
Scale is the ratio between a distance on the map and the same distance on the ground. It is shown in three ways.
- Statement scale — one centimetre represents five kilometres.
- Representative fraction — written as 1:500000, with no units, so it works in any unit.
- Graphical or linear scale — a marked line, which stays correct even if the map is enlarged or reduced.
Large scale = small area, more detail | Small scale = large area, less detail
This is the item most often reversed. A large-scale map covers a small area in great detail, such as a village map; a small-scale map covers a large area with little detail, such as a world map. The names describe the fraction, not the area.
Direction, Symbols and Grid
- The four cardinal directions are north, south, east and west; the four intermediate ones north-east, south-east, south-west and north-west.
- North is shown by an arrow, and maps are conventionally drawn with north at the top.
- Conventional symbols are internationally agreed, so a map can be read regardless of language — the point of using them.
- Colour convention: blue for water, green for plains, yellow for plateaus, brown for mountains.
- The grid of latitude and longitude lines fixes any location on the earth.
The language-independence of symbols is the reasoning question here, and it is worth making in a classroom: a map can be read by someone who cannot read the words on it, which is exactly why symbols are standardised.
