Trains, Boats and Streams

Train questions are relative speed questions: add the speeds when objects move in opposite directions and subtract them when they move in the same direction. Boat questions are the same idea in water: downstream speed is boat plus stream, upstream speed is boat minus stream.

Train formulas

SituationDistance coveredSpeed used
Train crosses a poleLength of the trainTrain speed
Train crosses a platformTrain plus platformTrain speed
Two trains, opposite directionsSum of both lengthsSum of speeds
Two trains, same directionSum of both lengthsDifference of speeds
Train crosses a running manLength of the trainRelative speed

Boat formulas

Downstream = boat + stream. Upstream = boat - stream.

Boat speed = (down + up)/2 and stream speed = (down - up)/2

Solved examples

Example 1. A train 240 metres long crosses a pole in how many seconds at 72 km/h? The speed is 20 metres per second, so the time is 240 divided by 20 = 12 seconds.

Example 2. A train 150 metres long crosses a 350-metre platform at 60 km/h. Find the time. The distance is 500 metres and the speed is 60 times five-eighteenths, which is fifty-thirds of a metre per second. Time = 500 divided by that = 30 seconds.

Example 3. Two trains 200 and 300 metres long run in opposite directions at 60 and 40 km/h. How long do they take to cross each other? The relative speed is 100 km/h, which is 250 over 9 metres per second, and the distance is 500 metres. Time = 500 times 9 divided by 250 = 18 seconds.

Example 4. A boat travels 48 km downstream and returns, with a still-water speed of 10 km/h and a stream of 2 km/h. Find the total time. Downstream speed is 12 and upstream is 8, so the times are 4 hours and 6 hours, giving 10 hours.

Example 5. A boat covers 20 km downstream in 2 hours and the same distance upstream in 4 hours. Find the speed of the stream. Downstream is 10 km/h and upstream is 5, so the stream is (10 minus 5) divided by 2 = 2.5 km/h.

Traps SSC repeats

Crossing a platform covers only the platform length  |   It covers train length plus platform length

Stream speed is downstream minus upstream  |   It is half of that difference

Train pole cross kare to sirf train ki lambai, platform cross kare to train plus platform. Yahi ek line train ke aadhe sawaal seedhe kar deti hai.

Exam pointer — Trains and boats together give 1 to 2 questions in Tier 1. Pole and platform crossings are 25-second questions once you convert the speed at the start. The two-trains-crossing type takes 45 seconds because of the relative speed conversion, and the man-in-a-train variant is the most commonly misread question in the chapter, so read the direction words twice before you calculate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What distance does a train cover while crossing a platform?

The sum of its own length and the platform's length, because the rear of the train must clear the far end of the platform. Crossing a pole covers only the train's length.

What is the formula for boat speed and stream speed?

The boat's speed in still water is half the sum of the downstream and upstream speeds, and the stream's speed is half their difference.

How do I find the time for two trains to cross each other?

Add both lengths for the distance. Use the sum of the speeds if they move in opposite directions and the difference if they move in the same direction.

Why do I convert speeds to metres per second in train problems?

Because train lengths are given in metres and answers in seconds. Multiplying kilometres per hour by five-eighteenths keeps the units consistent and avoids a conversion error at the end.

60-second recap

  • Opposite directions add speeds; same direction subtracts them.
  • Pole: train length only. Platform: train plus platform.
  • Downstream is boat plus stream; upstream is boat minus stream.
  • Boat = (down + up)/2; stream = (down - up)/2.
  • Convert speed to metres per second before starting.

Downstream = boat + stream. Upstream = boat - stream.

Boat speed = (down + up)/2 और stream speed = (down - up)/2

Time = 500 भाग उससे = 30 second

Time = 500 गुणा 9 भाग 250 = 18 second

Example 4. एक नाव 48 km downstream जाकर वापस आती है, जिसकी still water speed 10 km/h है और stream 2 km/h।

Example 5.

Train pole cross kare to sirf train ki lambai, platform cross kare to train plus platform. Yahi ek line train ke aadhe sawaal seedhe kar deti hai.

Frequently Asked Questions

60-second recap
