Industry and Industrial Areas
Jharkhand's industry grew where the minerals lie. Tata Steel at Jamshedpur, the public sector plants at Bokaro, Sindri and Ranchi, and the coal belt of Dhanbad together made this the industrial heartland of eastern India.

The founding stories
- Tata Steel was founded in 1907 and the town became Jamshedpurबार-बार पूछा जाता है
- Jamshedpur is often called India's first planned industrial city
- Sindri fertiliser plant, set up in 1951, was a flagship of early planning
- HEC Ranchi was set up in 1958 to make machinery for other plants
- Bokaro Steel began in 1964 with Soviet technical collaboration
- All four were located to sit close to coal, iron ore or both
Why industry clustered here
- Coking coal, iron ore and limestone are available within short distances
- The Damodar valley supplied both coal and, later, power
- Railway links to Kolkata port carried inputs and finished goods
- Water from the Subarnarekha and the Damodar supported heavy plants
- Once the first plants came, ancillary units followed and formed clusters
Present industrial profile
- Iron and steel remains the leading industry of the state
- Sponge iron, cement, aluminium fabrication and engineering follow
- Small and medium units cluster in Adityapur, Bokaro and Ranchi industrial areas
- Food processing and tasar and lac processing are promoted as new areas
- Industrial policy focuses on value addition inside the state rather than raw ore export
- Weak power supply, land acquisition disputes and skill gaps limit new investment
Traditional and small industry
- Tasar silk weaving in the Bhagalpur-facing districts and around Kuchai in Seraikela
- Lac processing units around Khunti and Ranchi
- Bamboo and cane craft in forest districts
- Stone crushing and quarrying across the Rajmahal and Pakur belt
- Handloom and dokra metal craft as small but distinctive village industries
- These absorb far more workers per rupee invested than heavy industry does
The gap in the industrial story
- Much ore leaves the state as raw material rather than finished product
- Heavy industry is capital intensive and creates limited direct employment
- Industrial towns prospered while surrounding rural blocks stayed poor
- Skill training and small enterprise support are the stated policy answer
