Preposition, Conjunction
Preposition and Conjunction
Most preposition questions test a fixed pairing that must be memorised: married to, comply with, deprived of and superior to. Conjunction questions test correlative pairs such as not only and but also, where using the wrong partner is the error being set.
Fixed verb and preposition pairs
| Correct pairing | Common error |
|---|---|
| married to | married with |
| comply with | comply to |
| deprived of | deprived from |
| superior to and inferior to | superior than |
| prefer to | prefer than |
| absorbed in | absorbed with |
| angry with a person, angry at a thing | angry on |
| different from | different than |
Comparative words ending in -or take to, never than: senior to, junior to, superior to
Verbs that take no preposition
Some verbs are already transitive and need no preposition after them. Discuss, order, reach, resemble, marry, comprise and accompany are the ones SSC uses most.
✗ We discussed about the plan | ✓ We discussed the plan
✗ He reached at the station | ✓ He reached the station
✗ The committee comprises of ten members | ✓ The committee comprises ten members
Correlative conjunctions
| First part | Correct partner | Note |
|---|---|---|
| not only | but also | Not but only |
| either | or | For two choices |
| neither | nor | Never neither or |
| no sooner | than | Not no sooner when |
| hardly and scarcely | when | Not hardly than |
| though and although | yet, or nothing | Never although but |
✗ No sooner he came when it rained | ✓ No sooner had he come than it rained
✗ Although he was ill, but he came | ✓ Although he was ill, he came
Prepositions of time and place
Use at for a precise point, such as at 5 o clock or at the gate, on for a day or a date, such as on Monday or on 15 August, and in for a longer period or an enclosed space, such as in June or in the room. For movement, into shows entry and onto shows movement to a surface, while in and on describe position without movement. These are asked as fill-in-the-blank questions rather than error spotting, and the at, on and in ladder answers almost all of them.
at for a point, on for a day, in for a period or an enclosed space

Exam pointer — Prepositions and conjunctions give 1 to 2 questions per shift, and both are pure memorisation with no reasoning involved. The fixed pairings never change from year to year, which makes this table one of the highest-return items in the English section. Target 15 seconds per question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which preposition follows married?
To, not with. She is married to a doctor is correct. Similar fixed pairings include comply with, deprived of and absorbed in.
Why is superior than wrong?
Because comparatives borrowed from Latin ending in -or take to rather than than. Superior to, inferior to, senior to and junior to are all correct.
Which verbs take no preposition after them?
Discuss, order, reach, resemble, marry, comprise and accompany. Adding about, for or at after any of them creates the error SSC is testing.
What is the correct partner for no sooner?
Than. No sooner had he come than it rained is correct. Hardly and scarcely, by contrast, pair with when.

Preposition और Conjunction
ज़्यादातर preposition के प्रश्न ऐसे तय जोड़ों पर आते हैं जिन्हें याद करना ही पड़ता है: married to, comply with, deprived of और superior to.
|---|---|
| married to | married with |
| comply with | comply to |
| deprived of | deprived from |
| superior to और inferior to | superior than |
| prefer to | prefer than |
| absorbed in | absorbed with |
| व्यक्ति पर angry with, चीज़ पर angry at | angry on |
| different from | different than |
-or पर खत्म होने वाले comparative शब्द to लेते हैं, than कभी नहीं: senior to, junior to, superior to
✗ We discussed about the plan | ✓ We discussed the plan
✗ He reached at the station | ✓ He reached the station
✗ The committee comprises of ten members | ✓ The committee comprises ten members
Correlative conjunctions
|---|---|---|
| not only | but also | but only नहीं |
| neither | nor | neither or कभी नहीं |
| no sooner | than | no sooner when नहीं |
| hardly और scarcely | when | hardly than नहीं |
✗ No sooner he came when it rained | ✓ No sooner had he come than it rained

किसी सटीक बिंदु के लिए at लगाएँ, जैसे at 5 o clock या at the gate; किसी दिन या तारीख़ के लिए on, जैसे on Monday या on 15 August; और लंबी अवधि या घिरी हुई जगह के लिए in, जैसे in June या in the room.

Frequently Asked Questions
To, with नहीं। She is married to a doctor इसी तरह के तय जोड़ों में comply with, deprived of और absorbed in आते हैं।
Superior to, inferior to, senior to और junior to — चारों सही रूप हैं।
Discuss, order, reach, resemble, marry, comprise और accompany. We discussed the plan सही है, discussed about नहीं।
No sooner
Than. No sooner had he come than it rained
