Substitution Coding

In substitution coding, ordinary words are renamed and you must answer a question in the new vocabulary. The method is a two-step chain: find the real answer first, then translate that answer into its substituted name. Reversing this order is the single mistake that costs the mark.

The two-step chain

Step 1: answer the question in real terms. Step 2: replace the answer with its new name.

If milk is white in reality, and white has been renamed yellow, then the answer is yellow. Never substitute at the start of the question, because doing so answers a different question entirely.

Writing the substitutions down

Write each substitution as an arrow from the real word to the new name. A written list takes five seconds and removes the risk of following the chain in the wrong direction under time pressure.

When the question asks for a real fact

Some versions ask a factual question, such as which of the renamed items is a vegetable. Answer the factual part using the real identities and only then report the name that item carries in the coded vocabulary. The logic is unchanged: reality first, renaming second.

Solved examples

Example 1. If red is called green, green is called white, and white is called yellow, what is the colour of milk? Milk is really white, and white is called yellow, so the answer is yellow.

Example 2. If water is called food, food is called tree, and tree is called sky, where do fish live? Fish really live in water, and water is called food, so the answer is food.

Example 3. If pen is called book, book is called table, and table is called chair, what do we write with? We really write with a pen, and pen is called book, so the answer is book.

Example 4. If sun is called moon, moon is called star, and star is called cloud, what gives us light during the day? The sun does, and sun is called moon, so the answer is moon.

जब सवाल असली तथ्य पूछे

कुछ रूपों में तथ्य वाला सवाल पूछा जाता है, जैसे नाम बदली गई चीजों में सब्जी कौन सी है। तथ्य वाला हिस्सा असली पहचान से हल करो और उसके बाद ही बताओ कि उस चीज का नाम coded शब्दावली में क्या है। तर्क वही रहता है: पहले हकीकत, फिर नाम बदलना।
