A tone question asks how the writer feels about the subject, judged from word choice rather than from the facts reported. Look at the adjectives and adverbs: praising words indicate approval, dismissive words indicate criticism, and an absence of either indicates a neutral or objective tone.

How to judge tone quickly

• Underline every adjective and adverb in the first and last paragraphs.
• Count whether they lean positive, negative or neither.
• Ignore the facts themselves; a passage about a disaster may still be written neutrally.
• Choose the mildest option that fits, since extreme labels are usually too strong.

Judge tone from evaluative words, not from whether the subject is pleasant

Extreme labels are usually wrong

Options such as furious, contemptuous or despairing almost never fit an SSC passage, which is typically measured in style. When a critical tone is present, it is usually described better by a word such as concerned or sceptical.

Worked approach

Approach 1. If a passage describes a problem using words such as serious and urgent but proposes solutions, the tone is concerned rather than pessimistic.

Approach 2. If a passage reports statistics without any evaluative adjective, the tone is objective, even if the subject matter is grim.

Approach 3. If two tone options both seem possible, choose the milder one. SSC passages are drawn from measured prose, so strong labels rarely fit.

Purpose questions

A related question asks why the author wrote the passage, which is answered by the verb rather than the adjectives. A passage that explains a process is written to inform, one that argues a position is written to persuade, and one that recounts an experience is written to describe. Matching the passage to one of those three verbs answers most purpose questions in a few seconds.
