Vocabulary in Context
A vocabulary in context question asks what a word means as it is used in the passage, which may differ from its most common dictionary meaning. Read the full sentence, decide whether the word is positive or negative, and choose the option that fits that role.
The three-step method
- Read the whole sentence, and the one before it if needed.
- Decide whether the word is doing positive, negative or neutral work in that sentence.
- Substitute each option into the sentence and keep the one that reads naturally.
Substitute each option into the sentence; the correct word keeps the meaning intact
Signals that fix the meaning
| Signal word | Tells you | Example |
|---|---|---|
| But, however, yet | Contrast follows | The next idea reverses the first |
| Because, since, so | Cause or result | The idea continues in the same direction |
| Although, despite | Concession | Expect an opposite in the same sentence |
| Moreover, also | Addition | Same direction as before |
Using word parts
Prefixes and roots narrow an unfamiliar word quickly. The prefix un, in, im, dis and non all signal negation, pre means before, post means after, and bene signals something good while mal signals something bad. This will rarely give the exact meaning, but it usually removes two options.
Worked approach
Approach 1. If the sentence reads that the scheme was praised for its equitable distribution, the word is doing positive work, so any negative option can be discarded at once.
Approach 2. If a sentence begins with although, expect the second half to reverse the first. A word placed after although usually carries the opposite value to the words before it.
Approach 3. If a familiar word appears in an unfamiliar way, trust the sentence over your memory of the dictionary meaning. SSC sets this question precisely because a word can shift meaning in context.
Words with two common senses
SSC often chooses a word that carries two familiar senses, such as address, which may mean a location or the act of dealing with something, or issue, which may mean a problem or an act of releasing. In every such case the sentence settles which sense applies, and the option matching the other sense is placed among the choices deliberately. Reading the full clause rather than the phrase around the word is what separates the two.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ Pick the most common dictionary meaning | ✓ Pick the meaning that fits this sentence
✗ Ignore words like although and however | ✓ Those words fix the direction of the meaning
Exam pointer — Vocabulary in context gives 1 question per comprehension set and takes about 20 seconds. It is the most reliable of the comprehension questions because the answer sits in a single sentence. Attempt it immediately after the factual questions and before the inference ones.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I answer vocabulary in context questions?
Read the whole sentence, decide whether the word is doing positive or negative work, then substitute each option into the sentence and keep the one that preserves the meaning.
What if the word has a different meaning in the passage?
Trust the passage. SSC sets these questions precisely because a familiar word can take an unusual sense in context, and the dictionary meaning is then the wrong answer.
How do prefixes help?
They narrow the field quickly. The prefixes un, in, im, dis and non all indicate negation, pre means before and post means after, which is often enough to eliminate two options.
Which signal words matter most?
But, however and although signal contrast, while because, since and so signal continuation. They tell you whether the meaning should agree with or oppose the surrounding sentence.
60-second recap
- Read the whole sentence, not just the word.
- Decide positive, negative or neutral first.
- Substitute each option back into the sentence.
- Contrast words reverse the direction.
- Prefixes eliminate options quickly.

| Signal word | क्या बताता है | उदाहरण |
|---|---|---|
| But, however, yet | आगे विरोध आ रहा है | अगला विचार पहले को उलट देता है |
| Because, since, so | कारण या परिणाम | विचार उसी दिशा में आगे बढ़ता है |
| Although, despite | रियायत | उसी वाक्य में उल्टी बात की उम्मीद रखो |
| Moreover, also | जोड़ | पहले जैसी ही दिशा |
Word parts का इस्तेमाल
Prefixes और roots किसी अनजान शब्द को जल्दी सीमित कर देते हैं। Prefix un, in, im, dis और non सब निषेध का संकेत देते हैं, pre का मतलब पहले, post का मतलब बाद, और bene अच्छी बात का संकेत देता है जबकि mal बुरी बात का। इससे सटीक अर्थ शायद ही मिले, पर दो options आमतौर पर हट जाते हैं।
हल करने का तरीका
Approach 1. अगर वाक्य कहता है the scheme was praised for its equitable distribution, तो शब्द positive काम कर रहा है, इसलिए कोई भी negative option तुरंत हटाया जा सकता है।
Approach 2. अगर वाक्य although से शुरू होता है, तो दूसरे हिस्से से पहले हिस्से को उलटने की उम्मीद रखो। although के बाद रखा शब्द आमतौर पर उससे पहले के शब्दों से उल्टा मूल्य रखता है।
Approach 3.
✗ Pick the most common dictionary meaning | ✓ Pick the meaning that fits this sentence
✗ Ignore words like although and however | ✓ Those words fix the direction of the meaning
Exam pointer — Vocabulary in context हर comprehension set में 1 सवाल देता है और इसमें लगभग 20 सेकंड लगते हैं। यह comprehension के सवालों में सबसे भरोसेमंद है क्योंकि जवाब एक ही वाक्य में बैठा होता है। इसे factual सवालों के तुरंत बाद और inference वालों से पहले करो।
Frequently Asked Questions
Vocabulary in context
Prefixes कैसे मदद करते हैं?
वे विकल्पों को जल्दी सीमित कर देते हैं। Prefixes un, in, im, dis और non सब निषेध बताते हैं, pre का मतलब पहले और post का मतलब बाद, जो अक्सर दो options हटाने के लिए काफ़ी होता है।
कौन से signal words सबसे ज़्यादा मायने रखते हैं?
But, however और although विरोध का संकेत देते हैं, जबकि because, since और so निरंतरता का। ये बताते हैं कि अर्थ आसपास के वाक्य से मेल खाना चाहिए या उसका उल्टा होना चाहिए।
60-second recap
- सिर्फ शब्द नहीं, पूरा वाक्य पढ़ो।
- पहले तय करो: positive, negative या neutral।
- हर option को वाक्य में वापस रखकर देखो।
- विरोध वाले शब्द दिशा उलट देते हैं।
- Prefixes options जल्दी हटा देते हैं।
