Word Roots

Word roots let you decode a word you have never seen. The root carries the core meaning, the prefix changes its direction and the suffix fixes its part of speech. Knowing thirty common roots turns many unknown vocabulary questions into answerable ones.

Roots worth memorising

RootMeaningExamples
beneGoodBenefit, benevolent, benefactor
malBadMalice, malnutrition, malfunction
chronTimeChronology, chronic, synchronise
bioLifeBiology, biography, biosphere
geoEarthGeography, geology
graphWriteAutograph, telegraph, biography
philLovePhilosophy, philanthropist
anthropoHumanAnthropology
omniAllOmnipresent, omniscient
mono and polyOne and manyMonopoly, polygon

Prefixes that change direction

  • un, in, im, dis and non all reverse a meaning.
  • pre means before and post means after.
  • ante means before in time, while anti means against.
  • sub means under and super means above.
  • trans means across and circum means around.
  • re means again and mis means wrongly.

A prefix changes meaning; a suffix changes the part of speech

Suffixes that fix the part of speech

The endings tion, ment, ness and ity form nouns, ous, ful, less and able form adjectives, and ly usually forms an adverb. Recognising the ending tells you what kind of word an option is, which is useful in fillers and cloze tests as well as in vocabulary questions.

Roots in one word substitution

Word roots are especially useful in one word substitution questions, where the answer is often built transparently from a root. One who studies human societies is an anthropologist, one who loves books is a bibliophile, one who fears enclosed spaces suffers from claustrophobia, and a government by the few is an oligarchy. Once the root is recognised, the option list usually contains only one word carrying it, which converts a vocabulary question into a matching question.

Solved examples

Example 1. What does a benefactor do? The root bene means good, so a benefactor is one who does good, usually by giving help or money.

Example 2. What does omniscient mean? Omni means all and sci means know, so it means all-knowing.

Example 3. What is a chronology? Chron means time, so it is an arrangement of events in time order.

Example 4. What is a philanthropist? Phil means love and anthropo means human, so it is one who loves and helps humanity.

Traps SSC repeats

ante and anti mean the same thing  |   ante means before; anti means against

Every word starting with in is a negative  |   Some, such as include and inquire, are not

Exam pointer — Roots do not appear as a question type of their own but they raise your accuracy across synonyms, antonyms, one word substitution and spelling, which together carry 4 to 6 marks. Thirty roots take an evening to learn and repay that across four different question types.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do word roots help in vocabulary questions?

The root carries the core meaning of the word, so recognising it narrows an unfamiliar word to a general sense. That is often enough to eliminate two options and choose between the rest.

What is the difference between ante and anti?

Ante means before, as in antecedent, while anti means against, as in antisocial. The two are frequently confused because they differ by one letter.

Which roots appear most in SSC vocabulary?

Bene, mal, chron, bio, geo, graph, phil, anthropo, omni, mono and poly appear most often, along with the standard negative prefixes.

Do suffixes change the meaning of a word?

Not usually. A suffix changes the part of speech, turning a verb into a noun or a noun into an adjective, while the prefix is what changes the meaning.

60-second recap

  • The root carries the core meaning.
  • bene good, mal bad, chron time, bio life.
  • un, in, im, dis and non reverse meaning.
  • ante is before; anti is against.
  • Suffixes change the part of speech, not the meaning.

Frequently Asked Questions

Word roots vocabulary

Suffix part of speech बदलता है, verb को noun या noun को adjective बना देता है, जबकि अर्थ बदलने का काम prefix करता है।
