Remainder Theorem
Remainder Theorem
Remainder questions ask what is left when a huge power is divided by a small number. You never compute the power. Instead you reduce the base to a small remainder, use negative remainders when the base is just below the divisor, and find the cycle length of the powers. Most questions then collapse to one line.
Step one: reduce the base
Replace the base by its remainder with the divisor before doing anything else. If 17 is divided by 16, the base becomes 1, and 1 raised to any power stays 1.
Reduce base first, then handle the power
Step two: use negative remainders
When the base is one less than the divisor, treat it as minus 1. A minus 1 raised to an even power is 1, and to an odd power is minus 1, which means a remainder of divisor minus 1.
If base = divisor - 1, use -1: even power gives 1, odd power gives divisor - 1
Step three: find the cycle
If neither shortcut applies, compute small powers of the base until the remainder returns to 1. That gap is the cycle length. Divide the exponent by the cycle length and use only the leftover.
Fermat's little theorem
If p is prime and base is not a multiple of p, base to the power (p - 1) leaves remainder 1
Solved examples
Example 1. Find the remainder when 17 to the power 23 is divided by 16. Reduce the base: 17 leaves 1, so the whole expression leaves 1.
Example 2. Find the remainder when 2 to the power 51 is divided by 7. Note that 2 cubed is 8, which leaves 1 on division by 7. Since 51 is 3 times 17, the expression is 8 to the power 17, which leaves 1.
Example 3. Find the remainder when 5 to the power 99 is divided by 13. Build the cycle: 5 gives 5, 5 squared is 25 giving 12, 5 cubed gives 8, and 5 to the fourth gives 1. The cycle length is 4. Now 99 divided by 4 leaves 3, so the answer matches 5 cubed, which is 8.
Example 4. Find the remainder when 15 to the power 40 is divided by 41. Here 41 is prime and 15 is not a multiple of it, so by Fermat's theorem the remainder is 1.
Traps SSC repeats
✗ Remainder of -1 means the answer is -1 | ✓ A remainder of -1 means divisor minus 1
✗ Cycle leftover 0 means the answer is 0 | ✓ Leftover 0 means use the full cycle, giving remainder 1
Sabse bada shortcut: base ko chhota karo. Agar base divisor se ek kam hai to use -1 maan lo - is ek trick se aadhe sawaal seedhe nikal jaate hain.
Exam pointer — Expect 1 question in Tier 1, and it is usually a large-power remainder. If you know the negative-remainder and cyclicity tricks, it is a 30-second question; if you do not, it is unsolvable in the time available. This is a clear skip candidate under the 15-minute sectional timer if the base does not reduce cleanly within two steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find the remainder of a large power quickly?
First reduce the base to its remainder with the divisor. Then check whether the reduced base is 1 or divisor minus 1. If not, find the cycle length by computing small powers, and use only the leftover of the exponent.
What is the negative remainder trick?
When the base is one less than the divisor, treat the base as minus 1. An even power gives remainder 1 and an odd power gives remainder equal to divisor minus 1. It converts long calculations into one step.
When can I use Fermat's little theorem in SSC?
Use it when the divisor is a prime number p and the exponent is a multiple of p minus 1. The remainder is then 1, provided the base is not itself a multiple of p.
What does a cycle length mean here?
It is the smallest power at which the remainder returns to 1. Once you know it, divide the actual exponent by the cycle length and work only with the leftover, since the pattern repeats after that.
60-second recap
- Always reduce the base first.
- Base = divisor - 1 becomes -1: even power gives 1, odd gives divisor - 1.
- Find the cycle, divide the exponent, use the leftover.
- Prime divisor p: base to the power p minus 1 leaves 1.
- Leftover 0 means remainder 1, not remainder 0.

अगर base = divisor - 1, तो -1 लो: even power पर 1, odd power पर divisor - 1
Fermat's little theorem
Sabse bada shortcut: base ko chhota karo. Agar base divisor se ek kam hai to use -1 maan lo - is ek trick se aadhe sawaal seedhe nikal jaate hain.
Frequently Asked Questions
SSC में Fermat's little theorem कब लगाऊँ?
60-second recap
- Base = divisor - 1 को -1 मानो: even power पर 1, odd पर divisor - 1.
