The Vedic Period

The Vedic age follows the Harappan and gives 3 questions. The examiner tests the four Vedas, the contrast between the early and later Vedic periods, and the change in society across them. The direction of that change is what the questions really turn on.

The Four Vedas

VedaContentNote
RigvedaHymns in praise of godsOldest; the Gayatri Mantra is here
SamavedaHymns set to musicThe book of chants; origin of Indian music
YajurvedaSacrificial formulaeThe book of ritual
AtharvavedaCharms, spells, medicineLatest of the four

The Rigveda is the oldest text in Indian literature and the Atharvaveda the latest of the four. The motto Satyameva Jayate on the national emblem comes from the Mundaka Upanishad, not from a Veda — a distinction asked directly.

Satyameva Jayate is taken from the Rigveda  |   It comes from the Mundaka Upanishad

Beyond the Vedas come the Brahmanas (ritual explanation), the Aranyakas (forest texts) and the Upanishads (philosophy). The six schools of Indian philosophy, the two epics and the Puranas follow later.

Early Vedic Society

  • Society was pastoral — cattle were the chief measure of wealth, and gavishti, literally a search for cows, meant a battle.
  • The unit was the family, then the gram, vish and jana.
  • The chief was the rajan, assisted by the assemblies sabha and samiti.
  • Women had a respected position; Gargi, Maitreyi and Lopamudra are named as learned women.
  • Varna existed but was fluid and based on occupation, not birth.
  • The principal deity was Indra; worship was through hymns rather than temples.

The Later Vedic Change

AspectEarly VedicLater Vedic
EconomyPastoral, cattle-basedAgricultural, land-based
MetalCopper and bronzeIron, which cleared the forests
Political unitTribe (jana)Territory (janapada)
ChiefRajan, chosenKing, hereditary; large sacrifices
VarnaFluid, by occupationRigid, by birth
WomenRespected, educatedPosition declined
Chief deityIndra, AgniPrajapati, Vishnu, Rudra

The whole direction of change is from mobile and tribal to settled and territorial, and iron is the technology that drives it. Iron axes cleared the Gangetic forests, agriculture produced a surplus, the surplus supported kings and priests, and society hardened. A question asking why varna became rigid is answered by that chain, not by a date.

Where This Happened

The early Vedic people lived in the Sapta Sindhu, the land of seven rivers in the north-west. In the later Vedic period the centre shifted east into the Ganga valley, into the region that would become Kosala, Videha and Magadha.

That eastward shift matters for a Bihar candidate: it is the movement that brings the Vedic world into Bihar, and it sets up the rise of Magadha in the next topic. Videha, with its capital at Mithila and its king Janaka, lies in north Bihar.

ऊत्तर वैदिक काल में लोहे के आने से खेती बढ़ी और समाज कठोर हुआ।

TRE pointer: The early versus later Vedic comparison table is what the questions are built on, and the examiner usually gives one feature and asks for the period. The Satyameva Jayate source is the classic trap — Upanishad, not Veda. For Bihar, note the eastward shift into the Ganga valley and Videha and Mithila, which connects this topic to the state's own past rather than leaving it as north-western history.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the oldest Veda and which the latest?

The Rigveda is the oldest and is the earliest text in Indian literature. The Atharvaveda is the latest of the four, containing charms, spells and early medicine. The Samaveda is the book of chants and the Yajurveda the book of sacrificial formulae.

Where does Satyameva Jayate come from?

From the Mundaka Upanishad, not from any of the four Vedas. It appears on the national emblem below the Lion Capital of Ashoka. Questions offer the Rigveda as the wrong option because candidates assume anything ancient must be Vedic.

What changed between the early and later Vedic periods?

Society moved from pastoral and tribal to agricultural and territorial. Iron cleared the Gangetic forests, farming produced a surplus, kingship became hereditary, varna hardened into birth-based classes, and the position of women declined.

How is the Vedic period connected to Bihar?

In the later Vedic period the centre of activity shifted east into the Ganga valley, into the regions of Kosala, Videha and Magadha. Videha, with its capital Mithila and its king Janaka, lies in north Bihar, and Magadha would soon dominate the whole subcontinent.
