Vedic Age
Vedic Age
The Vedic age (c. 1500-600 BCE) is reconstructed almost entirely from literature, not archaeology. It divides into the Early or Rig Vedic period (c. 1500-1000 BCE) in the Sapta Sindhu region and the Later Vedic period (c. 1000-600 BCE) in the Ganga-Yamuna doab, and the shift between them changes economy, polity and religion together.
The four Vedas and Vedic literature
| Text | Nature | Point to remember |
|---|---|---|
| Rig Veda | 1028 hymns in 10 mandalas | Oldest; mandalas II-VII are the family books and oldest core; Gayatri mantra in III |
| Sama Veda | Hymns set to melody | Roots of Indian classical music; least original content |
| Yajur Veda | Sacrificial formulae, prose and verse | Only Veda partly in prose; Shukla and Krishna recensions |
| Atharva Veda | Charms, spells, medicine | Latest; reflects popular non-Aryan belief; also called Brahma Veda |
Each Veda has four layers: Samhita (hymn collection), Brahmana (ritual explanation), Aranyaka (forest treatises) and Upanishad (philosophy). The Vedangas - Shiksha, Kalpa, Vyakarana, Nirukta, Chhanda and Jyotisha - are limbs of the Veda, not Vedas themselves.
Samhita → Brahmana → Aranyaka → Upanishad (ritual to philosophy)

Early Vedic society and polity
Rig Vedic society was pastoral and tribal. Cattle were the main measure of wealth: gavishthi literally means 'search for cows' but is used for war, and gopati means both lord of cows and chief. The tribe was the jana, its chief the rajan, who was not a territorial king but a leader of people. Assemblies - Sabha (elders), Samiti (the general tribal assembly) and Vidatha (oldest, with economic and religious functions) - checked the chief. Women could attend the Sabha and Vidatha.
- The Battle of Ten Kings (Dasarajna) on the Parushni (Ravi) - Bharata chief Sudas defeats a confederacy
- Purohita, Senani and Gramani are the main functionaries; no regular army or tax
- Bali was a voluntary offering, not a compulsory tax
- Varna in the Rig Veda originally means colour; the Purusha Sukta of the tenth mandala is the first mention of four varnas and is a late addition
- Indra, Agni and Varuna dominate; Indra has the most hymns, Agni is second
Later Vedic transformation
The eastward move into the doab, helped by iron (called shyama ayas or krishna ayas), turns pastoralists into settled agriculturists. Political units become territorial, the rajan becomes samrat, ekrat or adhiraja, and elaborate sacrifices legitimise him. Taxation becomes regular and the assemblies weaken - the Vidatha disappears altogether and women lose their place in the Sabha.
| Feature | Early Vedic | Later Vedic |
|---|---|---|
| Economy | Pastoral, cattle wealth, limited farming | Settled agriculture, rice (vrihi), iron tools |
| Polity | Tribal, jana, chief checked by assemblies | Territorial, janapada, king with rituals and taxes |
| Society | Varna fluid, no rigid caste | Four varnas hardened, gotra and ashrama appear |
| Religion | Indra, Agni, Varuna; simple sacrifice | Prajapati supreme; Vishnu and Rudra rise; elaborate yajnas |
| Women | Attend Sabha and Vidatha; Gargi, Maitreyi honoured | Excluded from assemblies, position declines |
The great royal sacrifices are frequently asked. Rajasuya is the consecration, Ashvamedha asserts unchallenged sovereignty over territory a horse roams for a year, and Vajapeya is a chariot-race rite that raises a raja to samrat. The Upanishads, at the very end of the period, react against this ritualism and turn to atman, brahman and karma.
✗ The four ashramas are described in the Rig Veda | ✓ The four-ashrama scheme is a Later Vedic and post-Vedic development
Linkage: Later Vedic territorial janapadas grow directly into the sixteen Mahajanapadas of the next topic, and the Upanishadic reaction to sacrifice prepares the ground for Buddhism and Jainism. The iron-based agrarian expansion connects to the geography of the Ganga plain and to the economy questions on early urbanisation.
Exam pointer: one question most years, and increasingly on Vedic literature rather than political history - which text contains what, and which idea belongs to which layer. Match-the-following on Veda and content is the standard format. Traps: assuming the Purusha Sukta is early, treating Vedangas as Vedas, confusing Sabha with Samiti, and dating the ashrama system to the Rig Veda. Also remember that Upanishads are also called Vedanta and that the national motto comes from the Mundaka Upanishad.
FAQ
What is the difference between Sabha and Samiti?
Sabha was the smaller assembly of elders and notable persons that also handled judicial matters. Samiti was the wider assembly of the whole tribe that discussed policy and is associated with the selection of the rajan. Both decline in the Later Vedic period as monarchy strengthens.
Which Veda is the oldest and which is the latest?
The Rig Veda is the oldest, with 1028 hymns in ten mandalas, and the Atharva Veda is the latest. The Atharva Veda contains charms, spells and folk medicine, and reflects popular beliefs that were outside the older priestly tradition, which is why it was accepted into the canon last.
Why did the position of women decline in the Later Vedic period?
Settled agriculture and territorial kingship shifted value towards land, inheritance and elaborate public ritual controlled by male priests. Women were dropped from the Sabha, the Vidatha disappeared, and texts began to link status to sacrifice and progeny, narrowing the space that Rig Vedic women had held.
